Synergy & Mods

I'm completely confused on how the synergies effect mods and weapons. Can someone help me with the following please:

1. Does the character class you set at the beginning have any effect on synergies? (If not, what exactly does that class do?)
2. If I attach a "brutal synergy" mod to a weapon, should I notice the effect straight away - ie do I need a full set or gun that has that particular synergy?
3. Can I mix and match synergies? Ie can I have a brutal barrel and a scavenger stock, for example.
4. Last one I think but iys not related to synergies but mods. If I have a gun with a fire efect already on it and if I attach a mag with nano effect, for example, will it a) replace the fire effect, b) keep the fire and ignore the nano or c) hopefully use the two effects?

Thats it for now I believe.

You gun will have a synergy, then the mods you put in the gun need to have the same synergy to get the additional effects.

And 4. Nano = all effects (it's not an actually effect it's self). So the nano mag increases your chance to activate your effect, which in your case is fire. (If that makes sense)

So for eg. My plain "VBI Assault Rifle" doesnt mention any synergies anywhere but my "VOT Swarm Cannon" has info on the machinist synergy. Does this mean I can add machinist mods to the canon but no synergy mods to the rifle?

Okay, what if I add a bio effect then- will I bave bio and fire or one of the two and which one?? What is the purple circle effect? I thought the effects were fire (flame), bio (green splurge), electrocute (blue lightning bolt), radioactive (radioactive symbol) and nano (purple circle thing).

Just seen that purple is syphon on the in-game help screen.

Same in game help says:

You can add any mod to any weapon that has an open corresponding slot and benefit from the mod bonuses.

However, to activate a weapon's synergy additional bonus (if you have a weapon listing a synergy bonus), you will need to add the listed number of mods with that synergy (usually 2, 3 or 4)
