How does the voice area chat work? Do you just talk into the mic and people near you can hear and talk back? Anyone try this yet?

As far as I can tell, it doesn't work. Either that, or no one in the game uses a mic.

Was wondering the same thing. Maybe we could get an official reply?

I had to go to "Quick Chat" menu (press left on Dpad) then Chat Channels --> Area Chat --> Unmute Voice. But even after I unmuted, I can't really hear or talk to anyone...

I just heard someone! They said testing, but I don't know if they can hear me...

This goes especially for the consoles.

I think area chat works by ignoring my settings to be mute and killing my speakers with static and feedback whenever I'm in a populated area.

I'm not digging it. People have their mics on, and all you hear is their tv, or family. What's the point in having your mic on, if you aren't going to talk, or contribute in any way?

Ive yet to hear anyone or be heard. Area chat really needs to be fixed, the game would be so much better imo.

    Hopefully Helpful For Everyone
    ON PC

So i had similar difficulties. i cannot recall where i read it but i believe the CTRL key is what activates voice. just like above you have to goto settings and manually turn MUTE off so you can hear. I recommend going to a Human(purple dots) heavily populated area and test it out by typing into chat first asking if anyone that can hear me please type it into chat . If there helpful stay in close proximity to them and further your tests, you might be also helping that other player out in the process. Remember it`s US the people/consumer that can make the biggest difference in this game. The developers are there to listen(as long as theres a good point) and will hopefully apply some of our good ideas to the next patch and help everyone! So please be patient and enjoy the so far awesome game and the ****ING AWESOME TV SHOW!!!! Can anyone say Firefly with the best of every other sci-fi/fantasy show in a blender(minus the "twilight" love story :P)
    Enjoy!!!!

You should also make sure you're in the right chat channel too. On Xbox pull down on the D pad and make sure you're in area chat.
