Purplish number's show up at times

When i shoot something and it has this blue/purplish number's show up, what is the difference between them and the white numbering?

I think it's shield damage.

It does that whenever you shoot an enemy with a shield. So its the damage you are doing to the shield. The white is damage you are doing the the actual enemy.

I thought the whiteish numbering was shield? At least that's what it is in PvP and PvE. Did people discover a new play mode other than those two?

I play only PVE and every time I shoot an enemy with a shield its purple numbers until I kill the enemies shield then the numbers turn white. I dont know about PVP tho.
