As you already mentioned, it effects perk slots available. Weapon damage is not changed. The higher your EGO, the more likely hood of a weapon drops with additional bonus stats and/or mods slots being available on the weapon. EGO also unlocks additional loadouts (I'm nearly 2000 EGO and I use every 5 of my loadouts and wish I had more). EGO will also unlock additional inventory slots. Grenades get slightly better the higher EGO they are. That's what I can think of at the top of my head.
That's it just perks since it's a 3rd person shooter with pvp.
So how do you increase damage of a weapon other than the mods? I have a saw that I've been using and it topped out at 416.
EGO Rating effects:
- Amount of available perk slots
- Amount of available load outs
- After rank 1600, it will effect your weapons by giving them more and larger bonuses. Example; 1.25 Melee damage modifier and 1.15 Critical Multiplier on the same weapon.
- Increases how big your e-peen is
- Alternatively, shows how much of a life that you don't have
ego rating is like the level of a weapon. ever play WoW? u know theres some items u get that have a base lvl that u have to be at or past in order to even equip the weapon. last night i proved with a friends help that my theory of the ego rating being the same was correct. if a weapon or shield or grenade u have has an ego rating of lets say 1200, then a friend of urs thats 1199 cant use it. u can trade it to them but they wont be able to equip it until the lvl up. i do not think the weapons actually change in strength, i.e., i dont think a vbi autopistol from a 1200 ego person is better than one a 10 ego finds. there might b a difference here or there but if its the exact same pistol then im pretty sure the stats will pretty much be the same, itll just have a bonus or two the lower ego wont get yet.
For the most point, think of it like Gamerscore or Achievement points on LIVE or WoW, respectively. EGO Rating mostly indicates how many Pursuits you've completed.
EGO rating is not a level, it's a guide to how much experience and exploration you have done.
The experience part of EGO tops out at around 2600 EGO, while pursuits, weapon levels, vehicle levels, etc make up other parts.
If you want to increase your weapon damage then level your weapon skill, aim for critical hits, and mod your weapon to your play style to increase hits and crits. You can also stack certain EGO perks for more damage or ways to increase damage with EGO powers or different combat situations. Tactics is important, playing your strengths are important.
Finding a bigger gun than the next guy, not going to happen here.
Ego is just a way to fluff e-peen, nothing more.
