PS. Just because Thunder clap is "Published" author gives him no authority over someone else universe. I can pt to other published authors (david weber) who have bad science in them. Now if he was writer for the series, he would be an authority.

I was at SXSW, it was really hard to get a plushy. By the time I found their booth (it was outside, not even on the main floor) they didn't haz any.

There is no inconsistency. You're simply nitpicking.

I think to answer the question. Scrip is paper currency printed by E Rep and backed back valuable resources such as gulanite. Just as American money is backed by gold.

The world largely operates off scrip and bartering.

Also the VC take the scrip currency because the VC are officially a part of the UN or were at some point. Also why the jek do the Votans have only 5000 years of history and obtained space travel while humans have a much longer history. 6000 years of written history and much much more oral history. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recorded_history

Actually that globe above would be incorrect if you check out the wiki. E-Rep only has control over some parts of East coast (which was depicted in the E-rep currency's globe). West coast is largely frontiers and contolled by various groups.

The globe on the currency might very well be correct as E-Rep might actually control the Atlantic and Europe as well (which was not depicted in the series).

E-Rep when it was formed was the UN. As of today, they contain 193 countries and the Votan makes 194.

Which is pretty much what I am saying - America in Defiance's timeline is pretty much wasteland. Only Eastern seaboard really has heavy concentration civilized areas.
