I'm also a casual player. Fortunately, I have a husband who's far more skilled at these sorts of games than I am. Although my skills have improved greatly (I now consistently rank in the top 10-15 of arkfalls I participate in instead of not making the leader board at all like when I started), if I get stuck, I can count on him for advice/help.
Unfortunately, the kind of behavior that's made it so distasteful for you, Sonic, is a big reason I tend to stay out of pvp and don't turn to forums for help. It seems like there are a lot of people who would rather belittle someone for asking for help than actually offering constructive suggestions.
HOWEVER, that said, I did read your request for help with Jackleg thread. There were a lot of great suggestions in there. It's an unfortunate fact of life that there are jerks out there. Either you can ignore them and focus on the people who DO try to help, or you can't. As with anything else, it's often your own attitude and approach to things that determines your experience with the forums.
As a fellow woman gamer, the best advice I can give you is to ignore the trolls and the whiners, focus on the nice folk, and make the most of it. :)

I am woman have guns will shoot the enemy until I am out of ammo or dead or um trip or hit the wrong key or my cat jumps on my lap or I sneeze.....!!! And oh yes this game is testing my kindness to the world. I to have been playing pc games and others for a veeeeeeery long time. I have been around the good, the bad, and the ugly but am always more surprised at the fun or kind hearted. I hope we all {who want to make this game work} actually meet in game.

Aww man, this...:C
As you can tell from my signature, I am from Battlefield 3. While I am playing Battlefield and getting knifed or just repeatedly killed I will curse...like a trucker...a lot. At times I have dominated other players to the point they send some rather vulgar messages to me. I used to reply mainly with the same vulgar response, but after awhile I would either ignore the message or say Good Game.
Recently I have been suspended from these forums for "Trolling". I simple was trying to prove a point to which I posted a .gif of a comedy skit of someone simply shaking their head no. It snowballed from there and got way out of hand. I always try to catch myself before it gets that way, but I'll admit I let people get to me way to often.
My play style always supports other players. I make solo builds so I can handle almost any situation I encounter. If you are incapacitated I will risk my life to revive you. I have and will do again run out into "no mans land" to revive a fallen player being pumbled by 2 Elite Blacklungs.
I really hope I can better myself so I myself can become a known and respected player rather then a loathed one.

I too am a casual player, and my daughter is an excellant MMO Player whom has great experiance as a raider, and player. Defiance is a different style of game then the traditional RPG MMO. This is a Third Person Shooter, more along the lines of Hellgate London or Diablo. I wish this game had hit the ground with a bit more MMO elements, but alas it did not.
This morning I tried Neverwinter Nights Online open beta, being a fan of D&D from the PnP days, I could not resist plunking down my 199$ for my founders goodies. Since this is a Defiance forum I am not going to go into anything long winded or even compare them point by point. Butif I was to score them out of 10 I would rate the games Defiance 5.5/10 to NWN 7.5 (and its only in open beta).
