Is this still going to be cross compatible between 360/PS3 and PC?
The first time I heard about this game it was really bragging about the cross platform play. Is this still a plan? I have not heard much about it. Either way even if it's not I am still happy with it staying on single consoles. Just was wondering because it would be the first to do this and was wondering how they would integrate 360 and ps3 together. Would of been nice to settle fan boy wars in the PVP. hehe :P also on that note it would be awesome to play with some of my friends on 360.

I'm wondering if Trion shouldn't make a neon poster to put at the very top of the main forums page... this same question (and some others) have been popping up for awhile, and would have thought it'd be pretty clear by now. I mean with pre-orders being platform-specific, characters being platform-specific... even the betas all being on separate dates. *shrugs* :p

Indeed true as well. I dunno though... flashing neon may have added that extra bit of raunchy touch. Maybe that's just me.

Cross-platform play for PC and consoles doesn't make sense, there's too uneven of a playing field for it to work properly. If you're really interested in the subject, here's a great blog post about it. It's written by Rahul Sood, who founded VoodooPC (luxury PC brand, now defunct). It talks about the major gap between PC players and console players; peripheral precision.

The problem is that if you linked Xbox, PS, and PC players together, you run into an issue where two audiences are immediately alienated. A mouse and keyboard is a superior peripheral experience; those two inputs allow for the greatest level of precision in a shooter game. Thumb sticks, on the other hand, are inherently imprecise and require a lot of behind the scenes work to function at a non-frustrating level. Console FPS games have a number of camera tweaks to them, which I am not an expert on, but they are pretty significant. It alters the speed at which your camera turns, particularly in small increments, and features a "stick targeting" system where your cross hairs will stick to a target if they move. Even disabling that feature (which most console players argue), there is still a significant degree of assistance happening to allow for moderately precise firing.

When applied to a game like Defiance, this may not mean much for most PVE gameplay. The players on all platforms can roam in the same world and get along just fine. The problem is when you get into any sort of competitive mode. In an arkfall situation, PC players will always have a higher average score compared to console gamers, simply because they can hit targets with better precision using their input methods. Console gamers will struggle to compete and reach the higher contribution tiers, which likely means less rewards. In a PvP situation, console players simply won't be able to be competitive. They will be constantly stomped on because they simply aren't able to react at the speed of a gamer with PC peripherals.

While I would love to revel in the joy of destroying console players all day with my superior PC master race equipment (hint: that's laden with sarcasm), it is not good for Trion or the community. Console players, in general, would obviously be frustrated with this arrangement and simply wouldn't play the game. That means lost revenue for Trion, which is bad. Having separate servers for each community may split the Defiance community a bit, but it's a better experience for all parties involved. Everyone gets an even playing field; everyone uses the same peripherals, thus nobody has an inherent advantage in technology.

I wouldn't count on cross-platform servers, simply because the competitive elements spoil any semblance of enjoyment you can get out of it for a mass market game.

microsoft will not allow cross platform thats just a fact of life unless they have changed their contracts in the past 2 years.

Also of note Sony has allowed cross platform in the past one problem. Every cross platform game ive ever seen released with a PC PS shared server has been over run with hackers. Sorry but I play PS3 so I dont have to deal with PC script kiddes killing my games.
