how do you level up weapon skills?
So, either I missed something, or I am seeing a glitch. I've killed a few thousand enemies with the same LMG. I've never leveled up my light machine skill.

I have, however, watched the little progress bar on the lower left of my HUD fill up and reset half a dozen or so times. When that bar fills up with my roller I get a flashy rank up message.

So, is the problem that I am using the same LMG? Do I need to rotate through different LMGs to rank up my weapon skill (in other words, is there a cap to how much xp I can gain toward weapon skills with the same weapon)? Or am I seeing a glitch that has stunted my progression?

    Thanks for any info.

If the particular LMG is capped on EXP then switch it with another LMG that isn't and then the actual LMG tree will continue.

You must change your weapon everytime its skill maxes to keep lvling the class.

Short answer is yes, you have to switch LMG's to level the skill.

essentially each weapon can only get so much experience before it stops earning and you have to switch, it took me something on the order of 40 Green LMG's to get the skill to level 20..

if you look at the weapon details if its experience bar is full, it no longer earns Exp towards the actual skill. its annoying, but thats how it is :(

    1/ Go to vendor.
2/ Buy a bunch of same weapons u like to lvl up.
3/ Run scrapworks / 101 coop maps over and over again.
4/ Whenever your gun gets max XP (game will popup info about it), salvage weapon and continue with other u bought.

Kinda funny but you have hit the nail on the head. Each individual weapon has its own exp cap and once it is reached you will not earn any more xp toward your overall weapon rating for that type of gun.

To level your LMG the fastest the best idea is to carry several copies of the gun you like to use so you can change them out after they have been maxed out. I carry 6 copies of the FRC Saw I like (they each have an exp cap of around 925000) I tend to do a lot of arkfalls so I use the guns a lot and they tend to fill up pretty quickly like that.

Also if you trade that maxed out weapon to someone else, they wont get any exp from it either, so once a gun is maxed its just best to sell it or break it down.

Weapons don't get exp in arkfalls. So, no.

The game will NOT popup info about your gun being maxed out. You will have to check for yourself.

I usually get alot of weapons from vendors, then go run san quentin*don't know how to spell it from memory). And keep fighting the hulker and enemies. Hulkers allow you to do double damage, and with there tons of health, they yield lots of xp

It tells you the weapon got a level. Weapons only get one level, so the game is telling you it maxed out.

I capped my Assault Rifle Skill to 20 by doing a lot of co-op missions. If your main focus is to skill up, avoid Arkfalls because Hellbugs and Scrappers don't seem to give any weapon xp and enemies that do give weapon xp generally do not last long enough for you to continually do damage on.

Co-ops, main missions, side missions, and emergencies are the way to go for skill ups. Remember to keep plenty of LMG's on you, you'll want to swap them as soon as weapon xp caps.

Uh yeah. Someone in my clan told me that so I tested the theory. I checked the exp on both my saws before I started an arkfall and after it finished and indeed they both went up.

Is it just me and thats a glitch? In this game I suppose thats possible or maybe its some people who are glitched negatively.

When did you test it? I suppose they could have patched it and no one noticed, since you're the second person I've seen today that said they get exp during arkfalls.

Although he said he got skill exp not weapon exp.

It does. It looks exactly same as skillup, just with weapon-name instead of skill-name and without that little text withskillup bonus. But graphicaly it looks same.

Yeah it will say it leveled, but have no number next to it, you won't even gain the 4 ego levels from it, but after that happends, check your weapons for a new stat above the xp bar i believe.

PC. We seem to understand the system just fine :P

Weapons get experience until they get a level. Then they are capped.

Weapon skill experience is a different thing. It's what you work on to get passive bonuses that are always present, and not just an effect with the gun you leveled up.

So what you are syaing is that Im using a Frontier Saw and that when I max out that individual Frontier Saw, that somewhere on my screen a message is going to pop up that says I maxed out my Frontier Saw???

Well then I can attribute SOME of the confusion to the fact Im on xbox, there is no such pop up message about an individual gun leveling.

Right in the center of your screen, just like when you level up your Runner or Roller, or get a weapon skill exp level.

Thanks everyone for the quick responses!

    much appreciated.

Too bad it works that way. I guess I need to keep my inventory stocked with crap alt weapons to keep leveling my skill. Wish I would have picked up on this before I got so far in the main missions :/ . I also wish the little XP bar beneath the weapon didn't lead me to think that I was progressing all this time. Oh well.

Thanks for the advice on leveling my weapon. Guess I will have to stop playing and start grinding if I want my weapon skill to catch up with my ego rating. Woo. :p

    OMG

Yes I know that. Im ego level 1400 and my LMG skill is 19. Ive seen that message 18 times now. What I have never seen because it does not pop up is a message that says my INDIVIDUAL WEAPON that I am carrying has reached its max exp. Just because you level up in a weapon skill does not mean that your in game weapon has reached its exp cap!!!

The message that pops up will have the weapon name in it rather than the skill.

WHAT?? no Im sorry it doesnt. Ive probably maxed out about 60 plus saws, either you are intentionally misunderstanding the issue or the game is glitched more than I ever thought.

OK. Doesnt make sense to argue since this may all be issues with an unfinished game.

I know two facts. I get weapon exp during arkfalls. I get no message telling me I have maxed out the weapon I am carrying.

If for the rest of you the situation is reversed, I am sorry cause Ill take the scenario Im in over the alternative.

One more level in LMG's to go then Ill have my passive damage bonus and never have to worry about maxing out another saw.

Further Ill be able to equip the awesome purple siphon saw I have for good (till I find an orange saw lol).

This has remained a civil conversation. I dont think there was any need to get rude. The message does not pop up, I might have missed it once but not the 50 or 60 times ive maxed out saws.

Tested it on an arkfall to see if anything had changed inadvertently and it doesn't seem to have.

He was probably shooting emergency mobs or something inside an arkfall. The rule is not "no weapon exp during arkfalls", but "no weapon exp from shooting arkfall mobs".

Well I didnt take screenshots but I did go do an arkfall and yes my guns both gained exp. As a matter of fact one was easy to see as I went in with one fresh gun with no exp on it. After the arkfall it had gained 41000 points.

Well, I guess you have an extremely lucky and unlikely personal glitch then, somehow, because by design you are not supposed to get any weapon exp from arkfall mobs. But please, try it once more, maybe shooting at arkfall crystals and checking the exp, or maybe hellions and progenitors. I am really doubtful that you really have some kind of personal glitch that nobody else has.

The different type of arkfall might be a good point to bring up. I tested doing a Hellbug Arkfall with a Hellion as the boss. I also made sure to shoot each type of mob at least once in case that would alter anything, as well as one Crystal.
