I've been having up and down bandwidth issues. (To sum it up, I started at about 800k/s, which dropped at times to 50k/s... to later jump all the way up to 15mb/s... to then have the patcher error out... upon a system restart was able to resume and am now clocking around 600k/s.) No Kaspersky here... but also to be fair, it's definitely not Trion either. Where the problems will arise is when so many people are downloading from the same location at the same time... the server can only pump out so much bandwidth per connection (reference when Tera went F2P and it took people a full week to download/update the client, and couldn't interrupt or pause it at all). The other issue as I've been saying in other places, could be somewhere "in between". Most think a connection is only from their system to the destination, which actually is false. Just like phone signals, data packets hop from server to server (just as a phone single bounces from tower to tower). Best thing to do to locate if there might be an issue along the way is to run a trace-route from your end to Trion.com and see if there's any slow-down or lost connections along the way. If there is, that can slow down transmissions as the packets then have to reroute to get back and forth.

As stated, firewalls/virus-shields can also obviously be an issue... but if you've gone through and made sure Trion has the access it needs and problems are still occurring, again, see above.

Well, I was mostly calling Trion sloppy for using an apparently unstable patcher that has to restart the download from the beginning upon encountering an error. It also seems odd they didn't prepare for high download volumes immediately prior to the beta test.

As for Kaspersky, if it is the only virus scanner that is a problem, perhaps. It isn't a particularly obscure program, though. Also, isn't Defiance scheduled to go live in about a week and a half?

For what it's worth, "tracert trion.com" indicated the trace ends at

    vl3834.na31.b001318-0.phl01.atlas.cogentco.com [38.20.32.6]

It just timed out repeatedly after that. I ran the trace three times and got the same result.

Hrm, that's not good then... definitely lost bandwidth along the way, perhaps even lost packets obviously. :(

As for the patcher... yeah, it does restart, but it seems to resume... or so it seems.

EDIT: If it helps you feel any better, I just re-checked my trace-route and it dies at the same exact spot, on hop 17, same server you listed.

Thanks for checking. It doesn't really make me feel better, but hopefully it will mean something to somebody at Trion.

I'll start by saying that the patching system could definitely be working better, but I don't seem to have the problem of restarting the download on error. In my case 'restarting' the download resulted in speeds of 50+ MB/s, which is waaaay to fast for my connection that was previously going at a steady 0.57, continuing until the point i'd previously reached which suggests that during that time it was checking previously downloaded content.

Preparing for higher downloads is a fair enough comment, but unfortunately it's a scenario that has been seen many times before. This also ties into the Beta point where they are introducing an unprecedented amount of users to the system basically in order to see what breaks. While a week and a bit isn't a great amount of development time, a the patcher bug and other small issues hopefully wouldn't be too hard a fix in that time.

In relation to the tracert issue, mine also dies on the same hop but if I had to say it might just be that that particular server isn't configured to respond to ICMP packets.

    Same problem here.

If they are testing the log in/patch servers they should say as much.

I've had the download restart 4 times because of the mystery download error. Every time it creates another file in the download folder of the defiancebeta folder. 73, 79, 80 and on and then begins the download from the start.

Now I know this is beta but it is a PAYED beta for some of us and it is not shining a good light on Trion who seem unwilling or incapable of addressing the problem.

Oh and I've run this on a clean admin partition with no firewall/virus as I do with all online games.

Indeed... which seems ironic the other platforms got a week of test time... and so far, before the PC test has even started, it seems a good number may not even make it to the test. Since the consoles have it streamed straight through the market place, with the identical configs per console... surprised they only afforded 2 days to PC users with varying degrees/amplitudes/causes of issues.

Mine SAYS it has a little over an hour left, of course it keeps fluctuating from 400k/s down to 150k/s... so Lord only knows. Also, with the things I've read about when it reaches the end, I'm kind of nervous what might happen next.
