That does nothing. Even if it did it would be non obvious and poor design.

I'm confused. I thought this game always had the filter, especially considering the Q&A addressed the question if they would ever provide the option to disable it that was met with nothing more than an immediate "no"

Or am I just missing something

It's not really about cussing someone out. It's about being forced to be filtered, even in clan/group chats. I've got no issues with profanity filters as long as they have a way to be turned off.

Yeah, um, the profanity filter isn't a stealth patch at all, it's always been there. I noticed it when I went to say "d*mn" at one point in chat and it edited it out. I rarely swear when I type, but once in awhile I might. Now you hear me on voice, my frustrations may slip out a bit more freely. lol

Hey, we're running around murdering masses of human and alien beings, destroying things with high powered weaponry and machines, exploring the idea of a post apocalyptic world where the law of man is murky at best if not completely scrapped.

God forbid you swears though, shame on you!

Not sure how strict it is. Though it's a little wonky to have chat filtered when the actual voice clips from the character dialogue contains swearing.

kind of silly, considering the npc's curse up a storm.

It is not really there to prevent swearing, it is there to prevent abuse of other people...Which normally includes swearing.

Please tell me you're not so one dimensional that you don't see the difference between gamers killing pixels of monsters, aliens or criminal humans with some drunk idiot screaming/writing obscenities or telling you he's going to have forced anal intercourse with your Mother because you didn't revive him.

I'm 55, a biker and worked in steel yards and ship yards and some of you even manage to amaze me with your verbal attacks. Either grow up or shut up.

...Not to mention the storyline characters throughout the main episode mission curse regularly.

most players swearing will be directed at other players, that's the difference. the swearing in the game is known, and scripted to not be offensive to the player directly

of course, it has no impact since we have voice chat.

yep just like Cass. At the beginning, she was saying 'Shtako'. But not much later in the story, she was saying 'bi.tch', 'Shi.t', and middle finger up at the camera.

It's fantastically useless at preventing abuse as creative vocabulary easily sidesteps it.

Does it filter out alien dirty words such as jek and shtako? :)

Good point on why filter chat in a game that has quite a bit of cursing. Way more than I expected.

There never was any way to turn off the profanity filter I think. Or is there?

Don't worry. If the Freight Yard gets taken back out then they can just repatch 1.012 and no one will notice. It'll just be a bad dream.

No, can't recall any moment where there wasn't a profanity filter which cencored pretty much every mundane word that might or might not have been used as a swear word once upon a time in human history.

It is simply totally and utterly stupid it is not to be able to turn it off.
If I do want to have to guess what 'you ****ing ******ed son of a ***** piece of **** get out of that ****ing vehicle you srupid ****' means ... I'll just leave the freaking thing on and try to deduce whenever someone exclaims up a bunch of asterisks.
With or without profanity filter you'll damn well going to realize when I call you a *** licking ******ed worthless ****. Which I might or might not have done in the past or do again in the future if you deserve it ... either way you're going to feel insulted whether you know the specifics or not.

The profanity filter is their way of encouraging us to use the curse words in Defiance.

Haha. See, when someone writes me a long line that is 80% asterisks it always makes me want to know what he actually said. If it's a good insult then it might even make me smile or chuckle. I don't need Trion to protect my delicate feelings. So don't take the profanity filter out of the game, just provide players with the opportunity to disable it.

The filter has always been there. Because no one wants to hear your Shtako.

I don't even know why they have a profanity filer in this game. Half the cut scenes not only have voiced curse words, but they subtitle them too.

If the game wasn't rated M, I would understand the filter, but as it stands it's kinda stupid.

Edit: Oh, and they can say Mother-F'er but not sh**? At least BSG used frack for the F word (alot worse than sh**) and left the others alone.
