I like the game because it's new and different, I also like the show that comes along with it. I don't play as much as others, because of work. But when I do play I enjoy learning new things in-game as I go along. all fun.

I play Defiance because I'm having too much fun with Hunting Horns in MH3U to switch to a slicing weapon to get the tail carves I need.

PVP is pointless its the same 3 maps over and over. PVE is pointless the co-op dungeons NEVER CHANGE. Arkfalls are BORING because there are ONLY 3 MAJOR TYPES.

No need for a swan song. Just leave. Bye.

I'm not really. I played for the race contest event that they did only to find that despite the blog entry clearly saying you need gold to get the vehicles, it's still available to everyone whether they do the race or not. I check the forums to see what the "new content" is after the episode airs but other than that I'd rather play Rift since I got storm legion from someone for free and got game time on there now and like 30 bucks worth of amazon gift cards to pay for some game time when I need it as well.

'Beat'? This is an MMO, there is no 'beat the game'.

And there shouldn't be any difference in gear from levels 1-5000. I have no interest at all in reliving Warsong Gulch.

Never tried PvP. Heard there was a hacker problem, decided it wasn't worth the headache if it was true. As for the co-op maps, I enjoy them. Yes, that's right, you don't like them, but I do. Accept that.

You see no reason to play, and yet, I do. I play because I enjoy it. I don't need fancy orange gear, to gank people at random with no consequence, to scream from the top of the leaderboards my superiority. I'm having fun, and that's what I need, first and foremost.

(PS, that doesn't mean you can slack off, devs. You said DLC was coming, and I'll expect it in due time... *poke*)

I'm still playing because it isnt COD or Halo...

I like the game. Generally, they got most of it right, but whats missing isnt enough to make mne stop playing alltogether. Its almost like the game is at 75%, like it was during the beta.... and in many ways, i still look at it like its a beta.

Maybe thats because I'm still hopeful they'll add worthwhile content to keep it afloat, or my way of justifying staying on it as long as I have, but I definitely see why more and more people are leaving. After you reach Ego 1K, you've pretty much experienced most of what there is to in the game. From that point on, it starts to get repetative.

Things like bugged challenges that keep you from completing entire pursuits, ridiculous prices for the in-game store, constant server downtime (which seem to address few of its core issues), a lack of variety in emergences/arkfalls, broken MP, and a 1/2-assed approach to the weapons system are all killing this. Shame, SO much potential

Nice to hear your opinion, and your opinion is that you play in the common MMORPG "carrot-on-a-stick" mindset. Lot of wow-clone theme-park MMORPGs created this stupid mechanism: farm quest A for N hours a day for weeks/months, only to get a better equipment to do the quest B, then farm quest B for N hours a day for weeks/months only to get a better equipment to do the quest C and so on.

Thanks Gods Defiance has none of this, the REASON to play is HAVING FUN, and Trion has put in game a lot of ways to have fun, and being B2P you can stop playing anytime you like and come back playing again to have fun when you like. And if think you completed all the content, instead of whine, just stop playing, you don't have a monthly fee to pay

Why do I still play defiance? To sit down whenever I have some free time not otherwise occupied by friends and family, and shoot some stuff in a postapocalyptic world, maybe run a few thugs with uzis over in my car. And I was a person who wouldn't have bought the game if there wasn't a common misconception, yet I continue to play it anyways.

Every time a new game is released, so many people come try it out, and many of them claim it will be the holy grail of games. Then after it's released, people realize it's not the holy grail, they get mad and fume on the forums for months until the next big game they think will be the holy grail of games is released, then move onto that game and that forum. They don't realize that there is no holy grail of games. Different people want and hate different things. One person wants to be able to grief others, and is not happy when a game curbs their ability to do so. Another wants large vertical progression so they can get the feeling that they are accomplishing stuff within the game and better than the people below them. Other people want large horizontal progression, so they don't have to spend a lot of their otherwise busy life to get good at one thing, yet can get good at many things as they put in more time. And there are supporters of the different business models with their own reasons, too. People with little time and a lot of money may prefer p2w games, while people with a lot of time and little money may prefer b2p, and those in between may prefer subscription.

Also, different people play games for different reasons. All are seeking diversion, but different kinds. Some it's only diversion when they have time and feel like it. Like a board game played with family and friends, but with their internet connected family and friends. Others are seeking a feeling of accomplishment they can't get in their lives. They want to feel powerful and important and better than others, and can only do that in an artificially constructed world. Some are seeking a vicarious experience because they can't get what they seek in the real world, or are afraid of the implications if they did. That includes both the RPers and ERPers.

So the real question is: why did you stop playing and seek to discourage others from playing the game? What hole in your life did the game not fill and you are mad about?

I finished all the missions and I'm slowly working my way through the Pursuits. I think the two main reasons I stick around are:

    1. I enjoy the TV show so far and know eventually we'll see more tie-ins to the game.
    2. Underneath all the bugs there's a fundamentally good game here that's completely different from anything else out there currently.

I think it's blatantly obvious at this point that Trion was nowhere close to ready to releasing this game, however their hand was forced due to the premier of the show. But I can't really give Trion a pass here because the game was in development for 5 years and I'm sure they knew way ahead of time when the show would premier.

The thing that's killing it for me right now are the bugged Pursuits. I mean, if all we're going to be doing for quite some time are grind Season 1 Pursuits to 100%, at least have them working. It's infuriating something so simple as "Kill 100 of this" is impossible because the game constantly resets the kill count. Or having practically 95% of the PvP Pursuits bugged because an entire map/game type is not in the game or stuff resetting. So I'm not going to put the time into grinding this stuff until it's fixed, and since that's all we have to do, there's really not much you CAN do unless you're bat**** insane and just grind XP and weapon levels killing the same mobs for hours and hours.

But, as I mentioned, the core of the game is very fun. If (and that's a BIG IF at this point) Trion can squash the bugs and introduce new content at a much faster pace, starts implementing stuff from this list, bans the cheaters and balances stuff, and the show starts tieing into the game much more (this doesn't lie on Trion, I know) then this could be a great game for years to come.

To all you kids out there that keep calling every habit that causes someone to play an MMO for years something from WoW, many of us were playing the same MMO for years long before WoW ever touched the market.

By the time 2004 came around, people already had several years of play in Everquest, Ultima Online, Anarchy Online, Acheron's Call, and others.

So, WoW didn't invent the idea of an MMO keeping someone playing for years, nor did they invent the carrot-on-a-stick. And there is no such thing as a WoW-clone. Everything in WoW was ripped from previous MMOs.

Im a social gamer who likes to loot grind, i like to help a fellow out in passing. The challenge is not too hard not too easy.

The motivations of gamers differ - acheivement, social and discovery being the main ones. If you are solely acheivement based in your goals you are unlikely to enjoy this game for long; i dont think that figured too much in the design brief.

Personally i get along with peeps who aren't motivation based and find some of those type of people repulsive, materialistic egomaniacs who enjoy grinding their arrogant jackboots in the faces of under-achievers like me. The sooner they leave the better.

Slowly running out of reasons/desire to play. I loved the game at first but at the moment I'm currently at lvl 1400 with the story long been done and 5 side missions left. After that then what? Just play the story over again?

I'm not an achievement hunter and that's pretty much all the pursuits are in my eyes, so pursuits will never be considered "content" to me. Ever. Pretty much didn't play since Friday afternoon and logged in Sunday simply to beat the Dodge challenge (I misunderstood what the "reward" was) and after beating it just logged back off after doing 2 or 3 emergencies as I was simply bored at that point. There just doesn't seem to be a reason for doing anything since there really isn't very noticeable progression.
There needs to be some sort of "carrot on a stick" type incentive to keep going in order to get me to keep playing so I feel like I'm actually working on something rather than just decimating a group of hellbugs/99rs/Dark Matter for the 1000000000000000th time simply for the sake of doing it. Now does that mean I want them to make exclusive gear that better than anything you find outside? No, not at all. Just SOMETHING to work forward to, even if it's nothing more than an exclusive skin/weapon skin/vehicle.

WoW is used as a term of comparison just because it's the most known. I could say Everquest-clone (the first theme park MMORPG with gear/instance grind was Everquest)

I've spent plenty of time playing both shooters and RPGs, but the way I go about playing Defiance is more like the way I've gone about playing shooters in the past. I'll get online and run a few pvp matches, or a few story missions, or maybe get together with a few clan mates for a couple of back to back coop missions, and then wrap things up. Maybe that's why I still enjoy the game. I didn't race to endgame so I could grind endlessly for the top gear. Hopefully at my pace, there will be new content before I find that it's too repetitive. I'm not too worried about it getting too repetitive though. All I did with the call of duty games was login and do the same battlegrounds over and over. This seems a lot more varied and captivating than that.

Sorry if it's no longer fun for you. It's still fun for me. I still have lots to do and lots to see. Games for me, and for many players like me are for as much of a long term experience as we can make them. I know that's unfashionable by today's gamers' standards, but as an older gamer - I play for as much of a long term journey as I can make of it. If there's something I need to improve, a skill to master, an achievement to unlock, a weapon to find, a location to discover - I will keep playing until the entirety is done. And I think this game for me still has that potential.

I play this a lot and I love doing the dailies(Contracts), plus messing with the weapons and the multitude of them. My god, this last weekend was brutal though. I got the 2500 arkfall kills within 18 hours...that was the worst ever because you have so many conflicts of interests. Some want the kills, some want to get through the thing really fast, and most want that killshot. Then some like me where if the small arkfalls are gone within the major arkfalls, I just take off and end up getting credit for it while tackling another major arkfall.

Love the game though, only thing is, DUST514 just released its biggest patch and if its great...bye bye Defiance.

The core gameplay is decent fun, but there's not a lot keeping me playing right now (I'm playing Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen for the most part). Synergy mod boxes (both basic and reputation) are borked since not all mods are available to be obtained by players. By extension, anyone who spends actual money (bits) on mod boxes are getting ripped off (It's like ME3's MP all over again. That is not a good thing).

Another thing that's irritating is that not only are scope/sight mods (well, only some now) badly bugged, they are really limited right now. We only have actual scopes, and one mod that increases accuracy but maintains the default method aiming (shotgun hipspread mod). There's no red dot or reflex sights, no improved iron sights (I imagine that would be what gives non-shotgun weapons an accuracy increase without messing with the aiming.). Because of the limited scope/sight selection, some weapons are better off not even having anything in the scope slot (mainly full-auto weapons with significant recoil).

The main thing that's been bothering me though has been the lack of a large variety of basic weaponry that's relatively easy to obtain (likely something that would be remedied if a trading post/auction house is implemented). Is a FRC/Frontier SAW that's fire elemental with recoil reduction really too much to ask for? Not me or any of the people I know has encountered one.

This. The game changes as often as you want it to. Yes, we are ALL aware there are quite a few issues that need to be worked out. Name another game that would allow the following chain of events:
1.) After completing the paradise contract, I picked up a Billet Metallic Challenger at the Shondu Consulate
2.) While I am in the vendor menu, my friend loads on me and purchases a white one for himself.
3.) We cruise around exploring for a while, Dukes of Hazard style
4.) Jump into a PvP Shadow War with each other.
5.) While playing said Shadow War, a electric Monarch shows up near a cap point and both Shadow War participants and regular players attacked the Monarch. My friend and I continued to the next data upload point, without killing the Monarch. A little while later, we both receive credit for attacking the Monarch - and then finish the Shadow War.

I don't know what you are talking about exactly. But I play this game because it is pretty unique and edgy, and at the promise of new content that will make it even better. SciFi has signed a second season. 5 DLCs in the first season. If each DLC pack has at least one PvP map of each game type (TDM and Capture and Hold) I'll be happy and thoroughly entertained.

By beat you mean reaching Max Ego, finishing all pursuits, upgrading all EGO Skills and Perks, reaching trusted with all factions? Right, because once you've done that it's really silly to keep playing a game that you might enjoy. I mean no one ever continues playing other games such as Call of Duty when they reach max prestige and unlock everything right?! That's just silly to have fun in a game when you've maxed yourself out. I mean come on, who wants to run around with friends and kill things or explore parts of the world you might have missed. I think we should all just go take our games back and with pitchforks and torches in hand ask for a refund because that's obviously becoming the norm FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO ****ING IDEA HOW TO HAVE FUN IN VIDEO GAMES ANYMORE!
