It's clear right now they are trying to cover each character's backstory and their relationships (lots of flashbacks), which is understandable because there needs to be some sort of connection to these characters as it's a character driven drama. They just do it in a way that's a little in your face and tied to a specific episode instead of dragging on.

Personally, I don't think that it's really that good. But that's not saying that it's bad either, because it's not. I would say that it's pretty easy to see where the show's going from this point on, and it's not going to be anything to rock my world. My interest in it is dwindling rather quickly, but I'll probably still dvr the episodes. Out of all of the shows on SyFy, this might be the one to throw some support behind. We're really not going to get another proper scifi show there, and the channel is more than happy to pump out the Warehouse 13's and the Lost Girls for their target audience. An audience that oddly enough includes, but isn't as narrow as the real scifi enthusiasts crowd.

If this show happens to have the legs of say Eureka, then I'd be ok with that. Over time that show was just fun. Once you get hip to the notion that they're never going to strive for anything kick *** with Defiance, and are more focus on holding the lower attention span viewer in place then it's a bit easier to just go with it. Personally, I've got my eye out for a few story beats that are over the horizon that might break the show for me. And when that happens, I'll be pretty much done. This weeks episode was eye roll inducing, and is the kind of shoddy material that is bound to drag this show down. I hope that they get a clue, and unstuck that "insert cliche for quick solution here" button. The writing was breathtakingly bad. They need some vision in that circle STAT.
I've never been a fan of the CW style of drama and "storytelling". But it is kind of important that this one works out well, or it's back to SyFy being all about wrestling and infomercials in between the other trite pseudo scifi nonsense.

Watch it for curiosity, nothing to love, decent visual efforts, lack of depth, poor character development, i can handle the drama but the romantic part between races its just plain crap.

not to fun not a total mess, lets see what happen then

I agree ArcTJ. the show is kinda lame to be tied to a shooting game. i thought Nolan and Irisa were going to be bounty hunters, going to arkfalls, searching for treasure or something along those lines. instead we got Romeo(the Tarr boy) and Juliet(Rafe's daugter) really didn't expect nolan to settle down and be the damn sheriff of the town and it become some not-so-futuristic-western. the CGI or whatever you call it is weak with the hell bugs and Volge. the wolf-bug things in the first episode looked better. anyway i stopped watching at episode 3. only watched 3 to see what hellbugs would be like in the show. turned out to be disappointing. now i just play the game and watch across the badlands for event/challenge updates.

Episodic content does not exclude an overall season or multi-season plot. Almost all of Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis had some sort of overarching plot, but it was subtle. Same goes for Eureka and a lot of Star Trek. You have to sprinkle your character development in with a self-contained plot in order to build a world, but still make it bite-size enough that casual people will still watch an episode every now and then and still somewhat enjoy it.

Take The Big Bang Theory for instance. Everybody raves about the show, but a large number of people only watch it on reruns and just when they sit down for something to watch...I know I do. Yeah, it's enjoyable to kill time, but if you watch regularly you learn the characters and the little things that make the jokes funnier and the characters more likeable.

I like the series more than the game.

It needs more Pew Pew and less QQ... by that I mean, it needs more SyFy channel and less Lifetime channel.. by that I mean, it needs more action and less drama....

Example: Episode 4 could have been a pretty cool Bio Man fight but instead it was 2 second fight of him getting shot in the back.

I will however I will give it till the end of the season to see if it starts picking up on the action. If not I will still play the game but prob skip the shows.
