I pretty much disagree with you entirely, while SG:U certainly wasn't ground breakingly original; I struggle to point to any sci-fi drama that is these days. I enjoyed SG:U even more than SG-1.. it was less simplistic, a lot gritter, and the character development was a lot more evolved, albeit slow. With hindsight probably too slow to maintain the 'whoosh-bangness' of it's predecessors that many of it's detractors craved.
Yeah sure some of the acting was a little bit ropey from the off... generally speaking I find that to be generally true for most Sci-fi series when they start out for some reason; It's like they need a season to get settled.. certainly can't tell me that Robert Carlyle is a 'cardboard cut out' actor, he's one of the best character actors around, sadly he didn't get the opportunity to fully develop the role.
