NEW YORK – May 10, 2013 – Syfy has renewed its groundbreaking series Defiance, giving a 13-episode second season order to the critically acclaimed hit that has catapulted Syfy to the top cable drama spot in the time period among adults 18-49, adults 25-54 and total viewers for three consecutive Mondays. Season two of Defiance, produced by Universal Cable Productions, will begin production in Toronto in August for a 2014 premiere, returning as the anchor of Syfy’s Powerful Monday’s block of primetime original series.
Redefining the transmedia experience, Defiance has distinguished itself with an unprecedented partnership between Syfy and Trion Worlds, by creating the first-ever true convergence of television and online gaming. To date, the game has garnered more than 1 million registered accounts while making gaming history as the first online open world shooter to launch on three platforms simultaneously. As the collaboration between show and game continue into a second season, players will have the opportunity to further influence the world of Defiance.
Kevin Murphy (Desperate Housewives, Caprica, Hellcats) resumes his role as executive producer and showrunner. Smallville’s Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin return as executive producers for season two and Michael Taylor serves as consulting producer.
"Bringing the rich world of Defiance to life has been an incredible team effort. We couldn't ask for better partners than Kevin Murphy, his amazing cast and crew, and Trion Worlds," said Mark Stern, President of Original Content for Syfy and Co-Head of Original Content for UCP. "We can't wait to see where they take us in the second season."
Set in the near future, Defiance features an exotically transformed planet Earth, its landscapes permanently altered following the sudden – and tumultuous – arrival of seven unique alien races. In this somewhat unknown and unpredictable landscape, the richly diverse, newly-formed civilization of humans and aliens must learn to co-exist peacefully. Each week, viewers follow an immersive character drama set in the boom-town of Defiance, which sits atop the ruins of St. Louis, Missouri, while in the game, players will experience the new frontier of the San Francisco Bay area.
The audience for its April 15 premiere was the second largest series premiere in the network’s history among adults 18-49, making it the biggest in nearly nine years in that coveted demographic, based on Live +7 Data. The premiere also delivered almost 4 million viewers (3,834,000) and has quickly become Syfy’s highest-rated original series this year in adults 18-49, adults 25-54 and total viewers. It has also received unprecedented attention as a transmedia event in partnership with Trion Worlds’ MMO game. Airing Mondays at 9pm, Defiance stars Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Stephanie Leonidas, Tony Curran, Jaime Murray, Graham Greene and Mia Kirshner.

Two threads same topic all snuggled up right next to each other, lol. Thanks for the press release though.
Of course it is! Great show + great game = WIN!
Over 1 Million registered users in the FIRST MONTH!! I bet WoW never saw figures like that in it's first month :P
"Defiance marked the second largest series premiere in network history...." Excerpt from the Article.
Ok so 1 Million registered users would probably have 10,000 unhappy customers so that means all the whining on the forums is done by less than 1% of the Defiance community... and Trion would know this! :D
Oh yeah for sure! And I'm sure it will, like most TV Shows do. Just look how much better Stargate got with each season :D
And that's pretty much why I said in another thread that I'm happy to ride it out for the next 6-12 months because that's when I think both the Show and the Game will hit their stride.
Your whole post makes my brain hurt for a lot of reasons, but lemme just skip ahead to the main point.
Not all the customers are unhappy, just disappointed. And also that article is a bit of a falsehood, as they have separate servers for the same game, which technically means it's not cross-platform so their figures of registration based on that alone (save the Steam/Amazon/etc. figures) are estimated AT BEST. WoW, on the other hand, was only on the PC and only sold through brick-and-mortar retailers and Blizzard proper back during it's initial release - no digital downloads, no promises of DLC "fixing" the game, just a bunch of nerds that saved for over a decade after making Diablo and Warcraft RTS games to attempt to expand their Battle.net servers to a worldwide scale on a 3D role-playing game. Started with 6 races, all unique, and had a crapton of problems that were mitigated over the course of the year after it's release...
But in the first month, it had millions, yes, MILLIONS of people playing, fixing it, hell many people even took it to private servers for some years because they thought Blizzard wasn't handling their business right. But did they get mad? Nope - they hired many of the privateers when Blizzard officially stopped support of private servers to be GMs, programmers, etc. and with their combined works, now WoW is a (mostly) functional game. The funny part about all of this? Many of these things were done before 2006.
Do you see Defiance, hell, even Trion surviving for over a decade at the current path they are going? A company can't rely on one game (Rift) to save them from messing up a game that they were paid a mighty high-dollar to make and haven't even really begun to finish.
I know, right? I personally use a Logitech G600 (In white! Now on sale for $10 off!) and would never allow my personal preferences to make their way onto the forums. And I am totally not paid off to write this. It's true, because I said it is.
I'm really happy the show got renewed because I enjoy watching it. However, Defiance the game took them 5 years to get the state that it's in now... which makes me very skeptical when somebody says something like, "Oh just give it a month and it'll have everything it was supposed to have at launch and the bugs will be fixed."
It's like really? 5 years didn't fix things, but 5 Years + 2 Months is the magical number that would have?
All I have to say to this is... Duke Nukem Forever...
On topic, I more then likely won't watch any of the Defiance TV show till it comes out on Blueray. I honestly can't stand watching episodic TV shows until they come out on DVD/Blueray/Netflix, hell I can't stand watching TV in general anymore as it is.
I only really watch two episodic TV shows now, The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones even then it still annoys me having to wait till the next week. I think my issues with stuff like that all started from watching Dragon Ball Z when I was younger, if you watched DBZ you know exactly why I say that I think that.
As much as I hate myself for admit this... and as old as this makes me in gamer years... no thier wasn't.. almost but not quite... I was there.. but why would there of been... wasn't that big a thing yet.
In my day we had raid up hill... with no weather.. no voice chat either we used third party software with mics on wires... GET OFF MY LAWN!
Also yay on the show
Good news for the Defiance tv show. :)
For what we have seen, the CGI hasn't been great - just the standard you would expect. With the $100 million Syfy has invested, i hope to see the CGI take a larger share of that money pot so that we can indulge are self's within the experience of defiance that much more.
What is with these disappointing ~10 episode "seasons"? Heck, the CW network had enough confidence in "Arrow" to go almost 25 episodes in its first season.
Good news. I hate to pour shtako on your strawberries but Stargate Universe was also picked up for a 2nd season. I really hope Defiance keeps going but I have got into too many good Sci-Fi series only to have them cancelled (Firefly, Flash Forward, Stargate Universe).
Its amazing how sci-fi shows like firefly get the boot so fast, and then you have shows like Lexx that dragged on for 5 seasons. I hope defiance the show keeps going.
As you can see in this article http://www.escapistmagazine.com/arti...Visual-History. World of warcraft was released on Nov 23, 2004 and on Mar 17, 2005 Blizzard reported 1.5 million subscribers. Thats not Millions . Not to mention it was after 4 months. I was there at World of Warcraft release, it wasnt as great as everyone likes to remember. Im glad to see the Series and game do so well
1 million in 2013 is horrible for 3 platforms, and as far as wow, unlike most mmo nowdays, they actually grew in subs, WOW lost 1.3 million subs last quarter, wich is a lot, but still more than this game has to even lose, there down to a miserable 8 million sub, just horrible.
http://venturebeat.com/2013/05/08/wo...n-subscribers/
Second season of TV show, new tie-ins with the game, all great news! :)
Actually they did NOT have a million their first month. I remember the announcement on the log in screen when they first hit a million. It was definitely not in the first month.
You also have to keep in mind that when WOW came out subscription games were generally frowned upon by the average players. These days a subscription fee (or charge for a premium account) is considered a part of gaming by most gamers.
Lot of people were pissed at Blizzard for charging a subscription fee simply because Diablo did not have one.
It is all about ratings dude. Soon as the ratings fall the show gets the axe. My opinion some shows get the axe too soon. Stargate Atlantis could have easily increased its ratings going into the next season. Same with Stargate Universe.
Lexx stayed on because it originally came from a premium channel which has crappy ratings anyways. Once it went to non-premium mainstream TV it did not last long.
Sometimes I think network officials are not very good at their jobs. Kinda funny sotry really. The person who was in charge when Power Rangers was bought was almost fired for buying such a "crappy low budget dubbed" TV show. Look how that turned out, lol.
