Help me decide!

Okay, so I have a nasty habit of buying MMOs and getting terribly bored with them.
(In my opinion GW2 was an awful purchase and I regret it daily, blargh)

I've been really looking into this game and I'm very interested in how a TPS plays out in an MMO.
I usually stay away from shooter games because the awful stories, the ones I like are stuff such as; Dead Space, Mass Effect, and Bioshock.

Does this game have basic MMO components such as a decent PvP system, crafting, guilds and such? My friends keep telling me to not bother and that the game is garbage but none of them have actually played it.

Basically, I just wanted maybe a list of pro's and cons to the game as compared to other MMOs out to date (Not necessarily shooters) in your guys' opinions.

The game is work in progress and due to it being a shooter/MMO its missing marks on both sides. Until it finds a stable middleground it wont be very satisfying to many. Given the games that you say you like, which have immersive stories and gameplay Id push you away from this title. If you get the game regardless, youll need patience until those features youre interested in are implemented.

Ah, really? This game looks like it could really be good. Its a shame..

Really hope so, its taking steps in the right direction, but its gonna need alot of steps.

Most of the opinions you will encounter on the forums are going to be either the "fanboy" variety in that they sing the game's praises endlessly and ignore its flaws, or the "hater" variety in that they only focus on the flaws and ignore its praises.

Then you'll get the people who give it to you straight, but it's up to you to sift through it and make an informed decision.

That said, the game is fun. No crafting at this time, and it's not a future feature we've been promised. PvP is pretty generic. TDM TDM TDM until the 23rd, then we get capture and hold back (again). There is also shadow war which is up to 64v64 but I've yet to see a match that high (the queue is stupid).

If you play 12 hours a day you're going to get bored fast. It is very important that you don't look on this as another MMORPG but rather a massively multiplayer sandbox-esque shooter. No classes, but a large perk tree you can optimize to your hearts content.

If you have a ps3 or xbox you can rent it first, as those versions don't have activation codes.

Gunplay of Defiance is most compared to Mass Effect. Environment/Mood most compared to Fallout or Borderlands.

I think you will either love the game for a short time and then get a little tired of it pending new content injection (like the rest of us) or you will hate it from the start and never get to any of its good qualities.

I say try it, but don't have high expectations.

The problem is, I think (from gameplay videos) it has potential to be woth $60.. but It doesn't seem quite there. Unfortunately everything I'm reading is telling me exactly that. Its unfortunate, as I was (and still am) excited for this game. Wish there was a trial, even if only for a day. I don't own a console to rent it on. : /

The game IS good. Its just better to wait for them to add more content before you come in.

Alright this new patch looks promising. I'll check in after a few days of its release and see how people feel about it.
