My prediction is that they were Irathient cultists, who arrived 200 years before their prophet was born, to prepare for her arrival. The artifact is the key to a Irathient teraforming device, that would create a forest/eden-equese world like their home planet.

Nolan and Irisa will be driven in-doors and underground by the razor rain. They will then scooby-doo the plot, have everything handed to them nicely, uncover the secret in the nick of time, and be forced to make the moral decision to either teraform the world or live in the world of Defiance... after much turmoil, they will destroy the device, someone will cry, someone will get shot, and we will never get to see an Infector in the show.

    It is known.

Well great, no need to watch the show anymore~ that clears up about an hour and a half of my daily schedule.

But the thing under defiance and the cave markings, that gold Ark tech that Rafe McCawley found in his dead sons drawer. If I'm not mistaken the cave wall showed what seemed to be a Volge holding a gold and silver arktech device. Maybe its actually some kind of weapon? maybe Arkcore/Ark Matrix like in the game but I doubt that old hag mayor whats to save the world with it or have the knowledge to do it

I just realised something while reading this post - the gold Arktech device was found in Defiance. Who wants to bet that some of the later game content involves finding the silver one in the Bay area?

A bit more theory crafting here:

Those two devices may be something of yin-yang or good-bad thing. Considering that Quentin McCawley does not appear to be a bad or violent person, this last episode got me wondering. First when he tried to throw that device and later when he killed that guy in his house, his dead brother appeared.
What if this is the result of the device itself? What if this device is a bad part of that yin-yang pair with the white device and it's affecting him to do it's bidding? What if there is some sort of "presence" in those devices and it is this that made him kill a man when Quentin's performance so far did not indicate any kind of violent personality in him?
When he killed that man, his "brother" appeared satisfied. One could even say devilishly satisfied with that evil grin he had on his face while looking at his younger brother killing the man.
What do you think? Could those two devices be more than just a "simple" terraforming devices?

What, kind of like a "one device to rule them all" kind of setup?
Anyway, My take on the ex mayor is that she is an earth for earthers kind of personality and she wants this tech to do something that gets all of the Votans off earth (remember at the end of ep1 she says "someday everyone will thank us" or something like that).
    Just my 2 scrip.

    Cheers

Did they say the cave paintings were only that old? I thought that was the date of the earthquake that shouldn't have happened; it may have only revealed them, they could be older, could they not?

True. I kinda mentally equated the earthquake with a spaceship crash, and came to the conclusion that they were made at the same time. Could be wrong though.

I would rather be my own faction instead of siding with either of the two.
