Weapon levelling: Is it the same no matter what you kill?
I have tried to level specific weapons, but mostly I have been leveling as I go along. So I am wondering....

Does it matter what you kill?
Is the weapon XP the same for all?
I know different mobs give different XP so is it best to find one that gives decent XP and is quick to kill?
Or is killing a much harder mob preferable?

I think it does, I noticed that I level up quicker when killing Dark Matter than I do with Raiders, although maybe thats because I get a better feeling of accomplishment killing them.

It is my understanding that the damage you are doing with the weapons is directly the exp you are getting on your weapons as you level. There are of course bonuses that people can get from group members and boosts and if you have other bonus exp modifiers (see vehicle bonuses).

Having said that, the targets matter only in that "Do they give exp at all". So for example things like re-spawning turrets, shooting the arkfall shard, shooting targetable boxes to destroy will all not give exp. But the normal mobs and such that do, will trigger the damage to exp conversion.

Doing a search of the forums would have probably answered your questions. Weapon leveling both for individual weapons and weapon 'classes' has absolutely nothing to do with EXperience Points. The yellow text that appears after killing an enemy shows the XP you were awarded for that kill. That XP goes toward you overall progression - note the progress of the yellow bar at the bottom of your HUD.

Weapon leveling is reflective of actual Damage inflicted by said weapon. I recommend going into your settings and turning on the hit points/dmg numbers so you can get a better idea of critical points and how much dmg you are doing. There are certain scenarios in the game that do not count toward weapon leveling. Anything that doesn't ultimately award XP once killed/destroyed does not count toward weapon leveling. The two times this matters most are at arkfalls (chain kills might be an exception) and turrets/weapon caches. I think I remember reading somewhere that shooting the Hellbug Hellion or Matron at arkfalls is the exception to the rule - however I have not tracked it myself.

    Hope that helps. Happy arkhunting!

best way to lvl your weapons is on hulkers. there are 2 that are spawn able.
    1. is from a side mission from tork whare you have to turn on 4 turrets on a rode. on the last one a hulker will spawn.
now this is how you do this one.
first. LET HIM KILL ALL THE BUGS FIRST INCLUDING THE MONARCH THAT SPAWNS. then you can kill him. then run up the road to get more ammo. come back and repeat. DO NOT TOUCH THE LAST TURRET.
    2. is at san quinton prison. this one is great for weapons that go threw ammo fast cause there ammo box there.

Personally I like Dark Matter for weapon xp as they have large regenerating shields. You can basically toy with them by taking out all of their shields in turn then moving onto the next one.
Elite monitors are the best as when they put their barrier up they're stuck to the spot so you can go round back and headshot them :)

For explosive weapons skitterlings in large groups (if possible) are great for leveling, this includes couriers and clustershots. For other weapons hulkers and forges are best due to their hit points, I like forges because the crit spot is easy to target since they don't enrage and it lasts more often then the exposed brain and happens more often. There are a few good spots to hunt dark matter, mutants and raiders as well. The more damage you do, the quicker the weapon is going to level up. Find those crit spots and hit them.

Psh, sissy. Kill all the skitterlings and monarch yourself while avoiding the Hulker. Getting >10-skitterling kills with one explosive is so fun, that mission alone is why I'm going to re-play the story line for the 3rd time. The question is, does the Hulker and Hellbug army spawn from the *last* gun you activate, or is it tied to the southernmost gun?

Side missions don't come back when you restart the main story line. At least mine didn't maybe I got jipped or it's different on pc I don't know.
