I feel the need to say this so that those who are confused as to why PvP in this game is more or less a ghost town understand the reason for those of us who share the same view. For me, personally, I've grown sick and tired of PvP centered games and gameplay. Due to this reason I hardly ever take part in PvP, nor do I feel the need to as the PvE aspect of Defiance (Which is the sole reason why I purchased it) is a breath of fresh air from PvP focused games and has much more going for it than PvP with the three maps that it has as opposed to the potential the PvE side has to offer over time.
That's not to say PvP won't have additions to it, I highly expect that with each expansion to the game that there will be some additions to appease those who prefer PvP type gameplay. However, don't forget that PvE seems to be the main focus of Defiance in general.
One way that could possibly ease those of us who are tired of PvP type gameplay is intergrating it into the PvE side of the game in one of the future DLCs. This would allow more depth to the general atmosphere of the game overall. How that could be pulled off? No idea. A world event similar to arkfalls where you compete, in some way, not only against AI but fellow players? Mhm.. who knows. It would definitely catch my attention that's for sure.
I think alot of the shortage in pvprs on this game is also thier is hardly no diversity involved. Either your a cloak shot gunner, Or a infector user. And no theres nothing wrong with either. But alot of people want to use thier on styles or variety of weapons.
And in order to be productive in this games pvp you choices are very limited to be effective.
Then theres always the fact trion has did almost nothing to stop the rampart hackers in pvp aswell.
And that will drive a stake through the heart of any games pvp quick.
I pvp more than anything else. I enjoy it. Lately though, I log in then sit in queue for 30 minutes to a hour and then log out. One more contract to finish off Echelon pursuit ....doesn't look like it's going to happen.
Not complaining however... seems every game that ever had pvp feature goes through this transition. When it comes out of this slump, it will continue to be one of my favorite recent games. I will keep it installed... still the most fun on the hard drive.
This is not surprising. Defiance is a PVE centric game. PVP is bound to have its up and downs when it comes to community interest. (Expect an increase after the DLC /charge blades)
I have to disagree with the diversity comment. EVERY PVP I’ve experienced has been “limited” in the same way. There are always guns/setup/strategies that dominate and are used a nauseam. From fighters with easy to use cheesy moves to Noob tubes. Your effectiveness has a lot more to do with your skill than your setup/weapons. Yes some setups/weapons are easier to use and so are used more often. However a skilled player can dominate with near any setup.
As much as I enjoyed Defiance PVP it is just an alternate game mode.
I'm going to respond to your entire quote, but I take exception to this. Nobody in this community (save maybe a developer) is an empirical authority on what the "main focus" of Defiance is. PvP is not some marginalized side feature that isn't a significant part of the game. Just because there's less surface area compared to PvE does not make it any less important or critical to the game's success. I know there are plenty of PvE players in Defiance, but there are also many who participate in PvP. Both PvP and PvE are critical to the game's success. Marginalizing one will only serve to piss another portion of the community off, and I am pretty sure Trion is well aware of this. They've worked very hard to try and appease both types of players.
Point being, PvE is not the "main focus," it just happens to be the way this game genre is structured. That's fine and dandy, I enjoy PvE content as much as the next guy, but marginalizing the PvP crowd is not the best of ideas.
That's the thing about PvP in any game, it isn't exactly the most welcoming experience.
You will get into you first few hours of PvP, and people are going to absolutely crush you. It's a humbling experience, and it can be very frustrating for many players. I can understand why that wouldn't be fun, and I totally understand why many people aren't interested in competing directly with others. That's what many PvPers find so enticing though; you can pit yourself against other players and see how well you compare to others. There's not a single piece of PvE content that will ever provide as much of a challenge as another player. I don't think it would be possible to program AI that's as good as some of the top players I've seen on PC-NA's PvP matches.
Personally, I'm taking steps towards introducing my guild to PvP. We have a lot of great players, but there are some members who aren't comfortable with it or need help picking it up. I've taken to writing a rather extensive guide on the subject, which I may make public at some point in the future. I think PvP is a very enjoyable portion of the game, and not taking advantage of that as a player is upsetting to me. I think it's great to introduce players to that side of the game.
Anyhow, back on topic.
I am not one for integrating PvE content into PvP content. I already detest Shadow Wars because of how annoying the open world enemies can be when you're trying to kill other players. It just seems like a nuisance and distraction, and it's probably my least preferred method of PvP. However, if there were some sort of instanced PvP event linked to the show/story in some way... that could certainly be fun. I just hate to see it as "mandatory" because of how many people seem to get upset over that.
Ultimately, I just hope Trion throws the PvP community a new map/game mode every once in a while. In the long term, some sort of ranked queuing system.
this. I totally believe most people do not PVP because they get crushed early in the experience and are just too demoralized. They then start calling people hackers and cheaters. This from a guy who has good and bad games in PVP, but just enjoy the challenge of 1 on 1.
Also, Freight Yard has plent of AR/LMG/Snipers..the infecors and SG are not 90% as the myth goes..
There's not as many hacking accusations (I love to call them hackusations) as one may think. I know guys liked Arked, Tempest, ScSessions, Decimas, Virus, and so on for PC-NA are getting them on occasion. However, I am very impressed by the community as a whole, we just don't see that many accusations flying around. It's great that many people are understanding that there's a skill gap that occurs naturally in any competitive game.
As for the weapon balance you mentioned, I think it's painfully obvious that Infectors need changes. It's too easy for players to crutch on Infectors as a go-to weapon. That's not to say those options shouldn't exist, I'm just saying it shouldn't be that effective for such minimal input. The homing needs to be removed in my opinion, I just fail to understand why non-aiming weapons need to exist. The Infector group of weapons would be just fine as a whole if you had to actually aim with them. As for Immunizers, I just don't see why they exist. The only anti-sniping weapon you need in a game is another sniper, that's how they function. Oh, and those ridiculous growths from Infectors that stop you from aiming? Dear god, those need to go.
Despite my little Infector rant up there, I think the weapon balance is actually very good. There are guys like Vilelent who destroy people with LMGs. Decimas and Arked are ridiculously good snipers. There's a lot of weapon variety that exists at the top levels of play. When you look at the average player though, it's very common to see Infectors and shotguns. Not that there's anything wrong with those weapons, it's just that they do not require the same degree of aiming input.
