I do really wish that they would add them. I probably wouldn't want them as much if if wasn't for the fact that not only do we have a power dedicated to melee, we have several perks for melee too. There are also melee weapons in the show("charge knives") and some outfits feature knives on them(Outlaw outfit has a dagger on the chest and a bowie knife on the lower back).
actually thinking of this. maybe they can put an extra equip slot for a melee weapon for when you melee it could effect differently. and the different things we could have. sure you cant hold it out the whole time. but adds a new visual and have pros and cons to it. you can have a weapon that shocks them but does a lower amount of melee damage and is slower to use because you'd have to pull out the weapon. or something like a small knife which is fast and can be used in sync over and over again. that small knife with your the Cloak ability would add a new field in the game.
I loved Mass Effect's multiplayer handling of melee. It was very simple. Not deep at all, only slightly evolved from "hit f to punch". But it worked, looked cool, and some races, like the Volus, had radically different melee abilities.
The mission-specific melee energy weapon is pretty bad-*****. I can see that weapon becoming something permanent, but a much weaker version. Besides for aesthetics, I can see why weapons like knives (no axes or swords, this isn't the middle ages) aren't included. As simplistic as it is, I'm sure the phrase "why bring a knife to a gunfight?" came up repeatedly. Consider the world that defiance takes place in. Besides the basic mutants, the majority of humanoid enemies wear some form of armor. The Hellbugs are basically walking pieces of rock, the 99ers are cyborgs. So unless you want to fight another Ark Hunter, a knife is pretty darn useless. The answer lies with our gun stocks. While you can't stab someone with an empty gun, you most certainly can bludgeon them to death. That's why most of them boost melee damage. Also, I have noticed that elemental effects kick in much more regularly when doing melee damage versus normal firing damage. If anything, they may introduce more melee weapons similar to the temporary one from missions, or others that take advantage of Ark-Tech. But a standard issue knife, I just don't see it happening.
My character had a nice sized knife on her back, but...never used it. Looked nice though. ~shrugs~
I could see swords being used, and maybe axes that had been used as tools, but certainly not battle axes and stuff. I don't think swords would be common, but they could still be around. There are a few people out there who have swords, even now. I have a friend who has a couple. Of course knives would be common.
Why cant we have Swords and Battle Ax's. Sooner or later the world is going to run out of Ammo. And look at the Mutants there already using Halberds And Blur is for Melee. Not that I want to get that c lose to have to. I think Shot Gun range is just Close enough for me!

And the Cronkhite boss used some kind of ninja force blade, I think? And kicked as well, if you got too close. Not entirely sure, my whole screen was blurred from the concussion.
So melee weapons of that sort do also exist in the Defiance world.
I find it funny that you can pistol whip and kill someone, yet they take a bunch of bullets to die. Game needs melee weapon, like a knife animation.
