The way it was explained to me after searching around the forums is that weapons of the same type share ammo. So in this case:
AR, SMG & LMG = same ammo
Pistols, Magnums, Revolvers = same ammo...

Well I "Ranked Up" my TACC Assault rifle. It gave the gun an extra passive ability, but as far as an EGO rating boost, I don't think that happens.
