I am yet to play DW:8, but I have owned 4, 5, 6, 6 Empires and 7. Along with DW:Gundam and DW:Gundam 3.
My personal favourite is DW:4 though, I spent many years going back to that playing as a few of my favourite characters. 5 was fun but I missed having the inescapable grapple moves (like Lu Bu's triangle 8 hit combo which enemies can't block), oh yeah and no custom characters =(. 6 was annoying because most of the characters had the same style as one another, and 7 I haven't really played that much.
Love playing as Lu Bu in all of them, but I did like using most of the characters in DW:4, such as Dong Zhou, Zhou Tai, Ma Chao, Zhang Jiao, Wei Yan and Meng Huo, but most of them lost their cool moves so I kinda lost interest in them.

The game play has changed quite a bit and lu Bu is stronger than 5-7 so it is a nice change up.
