I think the key to keeping this game going for long, is communication with the community - I hate to say it but there hasn't really been much of that at all so far for Defiance which is worrying.

We need some community representatives around here that are very active and taking player suggestions directly to the developers for future patches and content. This is how the game will grow in the right direction and become a better game in time too.

I really hope we get some more communication from Trion here, because I can see a bright future for Defiance if it is taken in the right direction.

Things for players to look forward to in the future is always key when it comes to longevity of an MMO.

And I don't just mean huge updates with new gameplay content. I mean things like balance, system improvements, etc.

If the cog doesn't work, it doesn't matter how flashy the wheel is.

I think the PS3 community will be the strongest to support it in the long run

Too many MMO game options for PC players
Xbox players tend to stick to popular games like COD Halo Gears Borderlands

Overall MMO's have the ability to update and revamp themselves over time

I see no reason why the Defiance client would not be on PS4 and why PS3 players could not be on the same servers etc.

I think that since the game and show are linked, the possibilities for stories are huge. Syfy has had some great shows, even if they have canceled them too soon. I haven't seen the game advertise outside of Syfy. Everyone involved in the game knows who they are targeting and who is most likely to stick around. Most people who get this game will already be a sci-fi and "Syfy" fan. They will be enthused about it and be willing to stick with it. It looks like a great show, with a huge scope, and the game looks like it will match it. I think as long as the show is alive, the game will have a good fan base. I think even after the show goes away (hopefully it won't be for a long time), there will still be a good base.

Terrible advertisement for this game. Like the WORST. What the heck was trion thinking?

I don't think we'll see a big boom, I think the population will be ok upon release and stay at ok for a long time as more and more people are introduced to the show. Then when destiny comes out the population will fall off quickly.

I don't see it being a massive success unless reviews are very very VERY good, trion dropped the ball on the hype train.

The tv show has some great advertisement. I can't go ondemand without seeing it.

I think speculation about a game's longevity is kind of pointless. I feel like I see ads for this game everywhere and it does pop up on OnDemand every 5 minutes. I think the idea is that everyone who would be a core gamer interested in the MMO already knows about it so they don't need to market to us. As far as SyFy is concerned they want to focus on marketing the show right now as that is where most of their bankroll is tied up. Once the show starts to take off and people are watching, the game marketing is thrown at them as it's easier to get people to watch a show than to try a new game, so you market one in order to market the other.

All the hullabaloo about the population declining after the launch of next gen systems is uncalled for. New systems are expensive and they will be available in limited quantities initially. It's not like a switch will flick and all of sudden everyone who currently owns a PS3 or 360 will suddenly have a next gen system. And for those who do buy one, they aren't suddenly going to lose all interest in playing with their friends.

Will Defiance be as big as WoW? No, and frankly I am sick of every MMO being compared to WoW or another MMO that did ok that's already out. If I wanted WoW I would play WoW but I don't because I am done with that type of MMO. I want Defiance to stand on its own for what it is because I greatly prefer action based MMOs like DCUO and have been waiting eagerly for another game along the same lines to come out.

Anyone who plays DCUO knows that it is a pretty healthy game even if it isn't absolutely massive. The community is still strong and as someone mentioned earlier I can't remember the last time I saw a server that wasn't heavily populated. Content continues to roll out and the devs are always paying attention to balance and player feedback. And it really took off after going f2p because the lack of a monthly fee for so much content in an ongoing world is really appealing. Do DCUO and Defiance feel as "deep" as traditional MMOs? Not really, but that is a point in their favor in my book because "deep" usually means a complete grind fest to max out every one of the 17,037 skills and stats available.

Who the hell wants to schedule weekly/daily raids and plan around that? Who wants to spend time increasing your woodworking skill so you can make an epic fishing rod so you can level your character's fishing skill by standing next a lake.... in game..... hitting the cast button? Not me. Does that mean that the game will be easier to put down? Yes, but it also means that it will easier to pick back up whenever I want and jump right in without feeling like I need to re-learn how to play or that I've lost precious time and now my friends and guild have completely outpaced me. It's that factor (along with no monthly fee) that, like DCUO, will keep people playing and if they take a break, keep them coming back.

TL; DR - Enough of the doom and gloom. They'll keep making content as long as we keep playing and we'll keep playing as long as it offers us a fun experience that differentiates itself from other MMOs.

But the more I think about it, the more I wonder how Defiance will attain large player base for long time?

Do they even want a large players base for a long time? Or are they calculating on a continuous flow of new and returning players that will play for few weeks.
Do they see Defiance as some sort of e-sport game?
What do you think will be the biggest reason for people to stay and play for a long time?
It'll ripple. Once the game has been purchased, all they have to do is say "Hey, you already own the game, we just added a few new maps, come have fun with us again".

I expect the population to regularly go up and down, it'll increase when a new DLC is announced, and fall after people have played out the content. That's the nice thing about no sub fee, it shouldn't be hard to get people to play a game that they already own.

Actually, I plan to stay here for quite some time. It would take a lot to get me to leave. For example, if the game shut down, I would leave.
If anyone wants to add me as a friend let me know. As this will be a game I will be playing...until the servers are shut down. PSN: jvallee25, xbox 360: vallee25. i will be playing on both but not sure which console will be my main...leaning towards the PS3 at the moment.

    Pretty much exactly this.

I'm hoping for the best, but it will depend on the DLC in content, size and time frame between releases. Having the right staffing they have for maintenance and turnaround time on patches. If they offer: daily, weekly, monthly objective/contract/missions, and etc; this is huge to keep your Defiance fan base longer. They also need proper PvP servers allow for rank matches for GB.com and urgentfury.com for clan this alone will create some longevity. This game has a lot of flexibility when adding content, etc. If they have a team the focuses on PvE content and one that focuses on PVP content; this game can be along for a very long while. I enjoy both but you have core groups lat can PvP all day while others can raid all day… they also need to reward these players for their time . I.E rare loot etc. People love playing to aquire the best gear, weapons etc. I farmed every boss on borderlands to collect every legendary weapon, and I’m a heavy PvPer, but I love boss fights and a chance to earn something rare.

The show will be an important part but not primary part of the games success. However, if it’s huge I think this will impact the game more than if it is a flop. Above all one of the biggest importances is to have a proper communicator with the gamming community and keep the community informed and engaged.
