Thread: I feel insulted

  1. #11
Did you lot not get round to reading the fine print? The bit that says this is an american game and an american show made for the american people. Should you be from outside the USA then you can be an extra. You will have to pay full price for everything, that you will get nothing, and that includes our gratitude for being stupid enough to pay upfront for everything/nothing. Only real americans can play 100% of the game. Trion will only ever support 100% american. Theres no point in complaining, you aint american.

    Way to go Trion.

Don't get me wrong, I expect this behaviour from a US company, but it was insulting to have a competition blasted out on the EU server patch screen which stated in small print that I couldn't enter it. Now that was insulting, and rubbing our noses in it at that.
I totally agree here, but I live in the U.S. and I know for a fact that I have as much of a chance as someone living in Cambodia to win this contest. I haven't the time nor energy (no endless supply of red bull) nor patience. They talk about not alienating the players, but the only people who can win these things are people with no life. Rant complete, sorry got distracted, it's totally messed up that they would dangle it in front of you guys like that, hopefully they can work some cool contest out for the other servers in the future maybe?

Just saying “laws” for a contest can't be that problematic. It's basically 2 things:
*What tax the Company pay for the price to be given.
*What tax the receiving person might pay to get the price.

No harder than selling a product internationally which most companies does every day. And as the "price" isn’t a car but the "appearance" in terms of footage it's a cake. If the Winner is in France, the Sci-Fi team gets a road trip...

That must be almost as annoying as being a console player for any of their other contests.

This is the case and it's unfortunate but unavoidable. In fact, in the US itself there are laws that vary State by State so that in some States residents can't take part in certain contests. Or they can't order some things to be shipped to their houses.

International rules and laws are way trickier. Just try to sell something internationally-it's a real nightmare. You have to look at taxation as one problem. Some countries might view winning any contest as something that is taxable even if you get no monetary reward while another one might not. And then there are also cultural problems-some countries might not allow such participation in a contest at all. And that could vary region by region within a country. It would be a nightmare to say then try and coordinate all that and impossible to do with the different systems and all the regions, even if it could be done.

I've played games that had contests or extra content only available to people in Japan and well that's just unfortunately the way it is. I didn't feel insulted because it's not personal. I just felt left out.

I agree yet I am still insulted. For one they still advertise the contest on my launcher, they know what region I am in so there is no need to post the advert. Additionally other contest, like the challenge hour are open to more than just US residents so why not this one? Its not as though this contest prize is anything other than bragging rights.

Why devolve into this sort of idiocy? If I play a Japanese made game I am likely to miss out on certain things that Japanese players can get. I played Demon's Souls which was never meant to be released globally. NA players made it happen. However, I never could get the really great dynamic themes and even some avatar outfits for PSHome that Japanese players could get. I understood that was just how it was.

I'm in the US and I want to know what part of the game can I play that you cannot? So I have the unrealistic possibility of winning a contest? Big deal. A flying pig will win it before I will.

To make all this a war of nationalities is the most ridiculous thing ever. The reality is that all companies must conform to the laws in the countries they do business in. And it's not all that easy. The fact that game devs actually do try and offer their games globally at all means they are not so pro-American. Demon's Souls was released in NA before going global because of the demand by NA players. When it also got released globally on other servers, it had some success in other countries, but not as much as in Japan and NA. And people that had bought the EU version of the game often went back to the NA version because the servers were busier.

It involves the tv show though which may involve other laws and rules that exclude residents of other countries unless expensive agreements are signed. It's easy enough to reward a player with an item than it is to reward them with a "cameo" role on a tv show. Even if it's just the likeness of the person being used. There are laws that govern the use of a person's likeness and they can vary from country to country. Laws related to copyright may also come into play. Consider that in the US a book may have a copyright that is not recognized in the UK, so the use of your image may be a problem.

That blurb on the launcher sure it's wrong but is likely just the product of a generic thing that goes out to everyone. It's cheaper to do that then it would be to create custom ones based upon region.

People really have to stop taking this stuff personally. Trion didn't mean to insult you at all and it's silly to feel so over a game and a contest. Real life is hard enough-why create false problems for yourself? It's rather arrogant to think a company even really cares about you at all. In general they may sort of care about their customers, but it's ridiculous to deal with them as if you have a personal relationship with them-they want your money and serve you in order to get that. If you get all warm and fuzzy about them, then so much the better, but don't expect them to reciprocate.
