Also, do developers actually listen to themselves when they try to make games "faster" and then wonder why it's increasingly difficult to hold player's attentions for the long term?

If anything, Defiance should be figuring out a thousand and one more ways to implement various forms of grind. The trick, of course, is to frame it in the illusion that it's more than just a spreadsheet game when a player is looking at the grind. That is what game design is all about, and why you guys are paid the big bucks.
Edit: The hellbug arkfall change is good, but I loled at the idea that anyone actually yells at the noobs. I can't even remember the last time I saw anything in public chat.
