What I can tell reading just about any series coming from the US, they are "all" renewed around April-May. So, each series might die suddenly if the counts are down. As with everything else over there, profit must get higher, if not, cancel it. Don’t take it on faith to run for another season to please the fans to pick it up again.

SO many shows have been cut in the middle with no ending or even answers so what might have come. The most famous must be Firefly (hence the expression, it’s just going to be another Firefly), they did a Movie as the "second" season to tie things up at least.

I would not be surprised if Defiance is killed after season 2 with all the story hanging in the air.....

I heard on the radio last week from a show that covers tv-series around the world that US alone is going to spawn 60 new series this autumn. We're talking series in the likeness of The Walking Dead, The Big Bang Theory, Heroes, Alphas, CSI and so on. 60 NEW, on top of the ones that already exist. Sorry I can't refer to any list made, I guess you have to browse FOX, ABC, NBC, CBS, SYFY and others to compile it yourself. How many of these will make it to a second season? It's crazy how much we commit to series that don't even make it through the first at times.

I think a lot of the confusion is coming from people that frequent broadcast TV networks and don't know much about cable TV schedules. It at least shows to some degree that Defiance brought in a new audience, since people that frequent cable channels like Syfy would already be used to the schedule.

That still happens, more or less, on broadcast TV. Networks like ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox do the 21-26 episode seasons because they get more exposure, which means they can cram more advertising and product placement in your face than cable TV shows.

Oh don't worry, you'll get 4 seasons in a year on top of that.

How to get Defiance at $9.99:

You people are lucky. In the UK unless it is a vomit inducing talent(less) show or a coma inducing perpetual soap opera our shows on average are only 6 episodes long some taking well over 12 months between seasons. This is best case. Sherlock for instance is three episodes per season (not uncommon for UK drama) with season two aired Jan 2012 and season three not due for another few months.

A lot of those will probably be cancelled before they are even 6 episodes in. It's ridiculous how many shows are cancelled before they even have a chance to finish their first season run.

I was actually looking forward to the new Munsters series with Eddie Izzard, watched the first episode on Hulu and everything then two months later nothing.

I was expecting something along the lines of twelve to thirteen episodes, that's been cable's MO for years now. I don't know where you're getting 52 minute episodes that would only leave 8 minutes for commercials and the only channels that get away with that are HBO, Showtime, and the like. 42 minutes has been the standard since the 80's as far as I know for an hour long show. I would love longer, but then where would the Dodge and Axe commercials fit in?

As far as the two extra months we have to wait before it starts up again, well I'll chalk that up to the tie in events and contests that we have running. They don't even know if the new character will be male, female, Irath...

So there are some holes that will need to be filled.

Well, we must not have had "Cable" per say then, living in rural Wisconsin. We had 3 commercial breaks every show, that lasted 2-3 minutes each give or take. Every once in a while, we would get that really expensive commercial that would last the entire commercial break all on its own.

Then again, Sherlock was 3 "movies" a season. As a US series it would be 12 40minutes episodes filled with more empty scenes with clues so that the audience wasn't confused of what actually happened...

I loved the sherlock series, I loved The Office (UK edition a must) and Couplings amongst many others...

I miss Faulty Towers and Young Ones....

What makes Sherlock so good is (apart from the cast) the absolute and unequivocal reverence Gatiss and Moffat show to the source material.
