OP, don't get me wrong. the game mechanics are fun, I wouldn't still be playing if they weren't. the DLCs that are supposed to be released show promise, but when they are coming who knows..... if the price on Steam is affordable I would recommend the game, but please don't spend any RL money on the in-game trinkets, armor, boxes, etc. have fun!

For non-sarcastic, non-dramatic answers:
Gear progression is small bonuses, and the value of gear depends primarily on which bonuses you get rather than EGO level. While higher-EGO gear does present the opportunity for better gear, it is a marginal-to-moderate increase which only becomes apparent when the random factors align just right.
Skill plays a significantly bigger role than gear.
You basically can't farm specific gear, so there is not a "time spent to upgrade gear" calculation like other MMOs. You get lucky or you don't.
There is basically no crafting. You can mod weapons in a few pre-defined ways, but you cannot create the weapons or mods.
Defiance is not a RPG, and you will not find all the rpg mechanics, gears have an horizontal progression based on random loot (from mobs and lockboxes).
Weapons have rarity colors, white is basic, then green, blue, purple (epic) and orange (legendary), more "rare" is the weapon more it has chances to have bonuses, also as you level up your EGO, you will have more chances to have more and better bonuses on weapons (wholesale, whites have no bonuses, green 1, blue and purple 2, oranges can have 3 or 4).
With random system, you can gain an orange at any level, like have an orange at ego 100 or you could have no orange at ego 5000 if you are very unlucky (never happend I guess).
Then for "crafting" (it's not crafting, but modding), weapons can have four slots (Barrel, Stock, Magazine, Sight), more you have ego more you have slots, ego 1200 to 1600 : 4 slots, then 1 slot and 4 slots again at 4000 (but you should have more bonuses on weapons).
In those slots you can add "modification" that give you bonuses, here a link : http://uk.ign.com/wikis/defiance/Modifications.
This system have the advantage to allow noobs to have not that bad weapons relative to high ego characters, and to allow that mobs do not have to scale to your ego level (mobs will never change, only scale when more players are present). Then everyone can play together, a total noob could play with an ego 5000, mobs and xp/loot will be the same (but ego 5000 characters are still a bit stronger).
Nerfed
Thinking about picking it up on the Steam sale.
yeah 66% off is the only way to get this game and not felt cheated in long run
Is this more of a skill based game or gear?
Skill, with all attention going towards ppl who lack skill and nerfs and patches solely for the purpose of that, helping less skilled players not feel so, how to say it, less or whatever..
Do you feel like it was time worth spent when you get a new piece of gear?
no, you can spent countless hours and resources on a item for them to just come in and destroy it because ppl don't like they way its being used in pvp..
How is the crafting system?
this isn't a MMO, its more of a arcade shooter with some rpg elements..
No progression.
No community.
Meet up at arkfalls kill stuff.
Slot machine loot system.
No difficult enemies-- well volge but once ya beat a few they become easy.
Its fun for a few Dollars but like most you'll lose interest and move on as this game lack staying power and any reward unless you get lucky at the loot slot machine.
If you truely wonder how the game is check out the forums you'll see the good the bad and alot of the ugly.
When will you learn.
At 1600 you'll get max gear.
After 1600 you'll get the same gear but will be charged up to 4 times more to upgrade it.
