    Defiance worth buying?

    Hey everyone,

Well, to start off: This thread must have been posted a dozen of times, but I just really want to know. I never played the beta's but the gameplay looks so solid and cool to play. I also like that there are ragdoll physics in the game. I just wonder, is this true?

Also i watched this whole video: http://www.ign.com/videos/2013/02/20...-with-defiance

    1. Is the gameplay fun and does it keep you hooked long enough to get you 50 euros (60 bucks) out of this game?
    2. Is the story entertaining enough to play through all of it?
    3. How are the glitches, bugs, freezes and latency?
    4. How is leveling? Do you get alot of loot and upgrades/perks ?

I really like Borderlands and I also played a couple MMO's so I kinda understand what the game is, and its really like it. A shooter MMO. But 50 euro's is alot of money.

I hope you guys help me out here. And thanks in advance!

Let me put it this way. I have a friend who doesn't play anything that isn't a shooter, and hates MMOs. He hated the stats of borderlands.

He pre-ordered Defiance after playing the beta.

So I will do my best to help you with your 4 questions.

    1) Asking if the gameplay is good is very hard to answer because it falls on personal opinions. Depending on if you get it for a console or the PC might also be a good deciding factor for you; do you like playing on your PC or console? The PC is your standard WASD keys with shift to run, ect. Near the start of the game you get a vehicle to help you traverse the world of Defiance which is very fun, the vehicles were very touchy in regards to you running into something like a pothole and your vehicle does a 180 or something like that. The missions are also fun to do so yes I say the gameplay is fun however I did not dabble with the PVP that much in the PS3 beta.

    2) Again opinions, the story starts off pretty cliche but I am positive that they story will pick up as the TV show starts up too. And take it from me, I love my stories in MMOs so this was also a big deciding factor for me as well.

    3) I did not really encounter THAT many bugs or glitches, the chat system was not working for me in the PS3 beta. I felt the grenades were also throwing too low or too high from where you wanted them to go. I felt that your character starts off with too little health but that is again just my opinion. They fixed a lot of stuff from the PC beta from what I could see.

    4) Leveling is standard MMO style; you do missions, you get exp, you do arkfall events, you get exp, you kill mobs, you get exp. The only one I am unsure of is PVP, I do not know if you get exp for winning/losing in a PVP match so someone else will need to answer that. "Do you get a lot of loot and upgrades/perks?" Well you can get weapons and mods from missions, some mobs drop weapons and what not so that is pretty normal in an MMO, mods do help you keep a certain a lot longer then a game like WoW where you could find an awesome staff or sword in a dungeon but then return the quest to the NPC and they give you a slightly better sword with slightly better stats. Perks, I assume you are talking about the ego grid where you invest points, are also standard where you get 1 point per level up but each skill in that grid can be upgraded up to 3 times I believe and each time you want to upgrade a skill that you already got then the points needed will increase. Say you go with cloak as your main ability, you level up to 2 and you can't upgrade cloak again because now you need 2 ego points so when you hit level 3 you will have the 2 points needed to upgrade the skill again.

All in all this game has great potential and if yo like TPS (third person shooters) then I say you will like this game because a long with the lore you will find in the game there is also the TV show coming out, unless it does not air in the Uk or other places which i think it does.
Sorry if this was not exactly helpful but I did try to help.

No its very helpfull, and thanks for the fast and long reply. (ChaosOnex also thanks that gives me a nice idea) Did you guys preorder the game already? It's not that i'm concerned that i'm not gonna like the game. I just wanna be sure it's entertaining enough to keep me hooked for a long while. Thats why i asked if the story is fun, because i read its lasts for 15-20 hours.

So is it like other MMO's that if i have a better weapon i get a slightly advantage over my enemy?

Also, wanna play it on PC, because I play everything on pc.

I say it's worth the money, especially if you are able to watch the SyFy show that is going to go along with it. In that sense it really is the first of it's kind. If you don't care about the show It was a pretty fun game. I found the game play easy to learn and and such and most of the events were fun. As for glitches and Bugs, I only played Beta so I encountered them but it was Beta so it was expected. Also not sure about perks and drops, apparently they had a lot of the loot dropping disabled for Beta (At least the one I was in)

All in all I think it's completely worth it, but AI have also been looking forward to this game since it's been announced so... Slightly biased.

    1) it's as good or better than other games being offered at the same price, really hard to tell here, not knowing your tastes or what you consider "worth" $60. But there's no sub so thats always a plus for me!

    2) Didnt get far enough in the story, but it seemed entertaining enough. I really want to see what the group missions offer.

    3) there was one major bug that I encountered in beta (using decoy and falling through the geometry) but latency was fine, no freezes, no crashes. Felt smooth.

    4) As far as the leveling goes, its not really a situation where you get significantly more powerful or get massively more powerful gear as you level (like WoW) than where you start out, at least from what I saw. It's more of a gentle incline up

My opinion, yes. Here is how I usually rate a game. I pay 49.99 for a single player game and get around 30-60 hours of time. Am I going to get that out of defiance. Yes, I can see me playing for at least a month or two, maybe longer. That is money's worth for me.

Game play is Different. Does seem a cross between various games - Halo, Gears of War and Borderlands in my opinion. Its tough to say really based upon what they've released, but I could see the content getting very repetitive very easily. Most of the Side Missions are just a "Gateway" to an already existing Open World Event. The only difference is that you're given EXP and a Reward for going and doing it rather than the standard EXP from doing it anyway.

I'm hoping this isn't the case further on in the game, but if you've already done them prior to the Side mission repeating them can just be a bore.

If I'm honest I didn't really get what was going on in the Story from the Beginning.. Not enough of a Tutorial (And when there was the important parts it lacked). With the same Generic Voice overs for Accepting Quests and such it can again be a bit repetitive. I was confused as to what was going on in the beginning and was a bit tired of being a Man Slave to everyone in the Cinematic.

But again I'm sure the Main story line took me to places I had already done before in a "non quest" style event and it just made the whole map feel reused and abused before it had a chance to sink in.

Personally I can see it evolving but from what they gave us in the Beta I personally wasn't hooked to the Story Line or felt like there was anything interesting going on. I was more interested in Blowing stuff up and trying to find unique events.

I did also see there was a distinct lack of Mutants after you went past a certain part of the game, and it felt like I was just fighting Hellbugs and the Bandit people.

Wasn't really that bad in all honesty. For a Beta I've had worse. There were a few issues here and there but no specifics that I can really remember. Did seem to be a bit Jumpy and the Phasing didn't work all that well at times and we'd sometimes be split up for the most random reasons.

Also we did have some problems with PvP and queueing however this could have been server related.

Levelling isn't really levelling, you just run around and kill stuff. Most the time I forgot about Ego's and they seemed pretty useless because you could only have one or two equipped.. So honestly I just left them be and did the game without it.

Upgrades and Perks aren't really amazing because they're limited. I found there to be a lot of "Melee" ego's but a distinct lack of Melee weapons. Wouldn't mind there being more added because that crazy Fist was pretty awesome!

Weapons.. Seem very... Limited.. All the same stats, no variation (Although this may change I'm not sure) but it all seemed to be about the Modding. I was using a gun under ego 100 and was coming close to top on the DPS in events and such. All me and our group used was an LMG. Fastest Firing with Most bullets you can just mow down things rather than faffing about with a shotgun.

Seems very limited as to what weapon is good when you have Hellbugs who take something like 1% damage unless they're hit in their vulnerable points. Really makes choosing your weapons pointless because unless you have something that can hit it in the right place enough times and fast enough you'll be sitting there all day trying to kill a Hellbug Monarch. How people on the Consoles play this I have no idea.

All in all yes its a good game, I enjoyed it and preordered and I'd quite like to get on now. But I'm still very worried about the longevity of the game and I think I'm going to get bored of things quite easily if there's not much of a Challenge. I'm an old school Vanilla Player who Loves 40 man raids where Clans work together, not Open world events which are a walk in the park. If they add more PvE and larger groups (As it is an MMO after all) I'll be happy.

I am worried about the "Console Port" Feeling, as it really does seem to lack basic movement features / key binds and such. Really hoping they'll make it more PC Friendly than a Console Menu feel for it all. 5 Menu's just to accept an invite to a friend and pressing ESC -> Hold Space for an Extra Menu?? What's that all about? Why can't you combine it into one Menu without all these extra tasks?

^^ All personal opinions, I'm sure people may disagree but It needs work to keep people hooked else I have a feeling its going to become one of those games you stop playing after a few months, much like Rift was.

If you enjoy jumping into a shooter to pass the time, for an hour or two, the dynamic events are great, there's always something to do.

If you like story, there's a long mission string that give you the same length as any main single player game would.

This game really gives you both for the same cost.

I usually finish a basic shooter in 8-10 hours and don't usually do a replay, even if there are achievements(Red Faction Armageddon anyone?). I've easily put in those 8-10 hours in one day of beta, there's just always something new to do, and I didn't even leave the first main area on the last beta weekend.

Also, factor in the DLC updates, 10$ every 2 months (or 40 for the year) gets you new content.

I'm just glad there's no "go here, kill 20 guys, loot 5 items and return them to me" type quests, I really hate those in MMORPGs.
