Does anyone know if the 10GB required install is a full install? What I mean is, is that for the full game install, such that the disc becomes a mere key and doesn't spin while playing. Alternatively is it a smaller install intended to allocate certain assets to the hdd to optimize performance?

An example of what I mean is what EA did with Battlefield 3. Upon first loading you were asked to do an install from the disc. This wasn't a full game install, but an HD texture pack. Basically it moved the textures to the hdd to better take advantage of the console's gpu. The disc still spun in the optical drive while playing the game. A separate dashboard install was required to actually install the game.

    I've been wondering this myself.

But I think it will be a separate install, as I don't think it would be stated if it was optional. So I'm guessing it'll be a 10gb separate install, then a further 5/6/7gb if you choose to install the disk too.

Which leaves me to believe the 10gb will be a download, as I don't think after xbox/microsoft partitions on the game disk there isn't 10gb left, even if there are two disks.

Im pretty sure you have to install the full game to play, meaning that the disc will not spin. I thinks its about 7gigs and the 3 left over is probably for patches/updates but im not 100% sure.
