As far as swords in combat, since these can be dagger or sword length and (in the show) only take up the space of the handle when not in use, they would be a decent thing to have. They'd be especially nice if killing with one didn't alert other enemies.

A: they are obsolete. guns are better

common sense guy: if you can charge a blade you can charge a gun. it's obsolete. again
Your logic is flawed. Have you not seen the TV show? Even if they are obsolete they are in the world and apart of the lore, if it exists we should have the choice to use them. If you always want to use a gun that is fine, but I for one would love to run around with a pistol as one weapon and a sword for my other.

Like the show, we should also get the choice to use it as a dagger or charge it and make it bigger as a sword (Like Datak did). Melee weapons can have perks for close quarters combat. Heck, the EMC guys with the swords (Mutant cleavers?) often times get close and I revert to using my gun's melee function because it is sometimes hard to aim and shoot them at close range (especially for snipers), and it often times results to me missing and having a very awkward shoving contest. I think it would make more sense to just switch to a sword and slice the person when they get close.

    I support OPs suggestion.

Got to thinking would be cool like at 3:28, 3:52 and 4:14. I hope we can do this style up in the game

Run around and do finishing moves on people while my friends shoot and weaken them for me while I slice and dice them up

Take turns doing raids we would on who gets to slice them up

explain to me how my logic is flawed. yes, i watched the whole season. did you ? did you see the episode where datak got all huffy and reached for his blade, and miner dude said 'oh please' and showed him his pistol ? do you remember how fast datak shut the fk up ? ever heard the saying 'bringing a knife to a gun fight'?

    Single blade idea

And just before I get off for the night I was watching this and at the 3:03 mark would be so cool in this game. I would pay out the *** for this and like long or short blades and just go crazy with it IF it is done right

I already explained it in my first post, when enemies get close melee is sometimes a better alternative, and yes I saw the whole season of Defiance. Even the Navy seals still carry knives in modern combat now days because sometimes they work better in close quarters. This game also has a lot of skills for stealth kills, melee kills, and killing people undetected. It sometimes also makes missions easier if you can wipe out an area solo without alerting the whole area and without making any noise, I actually do it a lot but normally as a sniper or with awkward gun shoving.

A charged blade would be great to sneak up on an enemy, get a critical kill with the 10 sec melee damage boost (from EGO), sneak to the next enemy and use the 10 sec damage boost to wipe them out as well, and repeat. This would also work in PVP if the player wasn't paying attention to the Mini map. Ever play Halo 2 on up? The Elite melee Energy sword owned up if you could get close enough to your target (which I normally could), so I imagine Defiance's will work similar. But imagine combining the Energy sword with Blur so that you are moving fast and dealing double damage, plus you get the damage boost from all the EGO melee skills. I already have this build setup, but I have to perform these things with my guns and as I said in my other post, it turns into a very awkward shoving contest.

A simple melee combo with a real sword/knife would be a bit more effective in certain situations.

EDIT: You could actually do everything in this Halo video on Defiance:

If it doesn't do it jump to 1:30 and watch it all the way passed that point, he explains what he is about to do. Ever think about silent invisible melee kills? In PVP I bet it would drive the enemy team insane if they couldn't see or hear what killed their partner.

I for one can see this being to over powered, and the game will start to look a bit to much like star wars, I think having the Blades in the game could be cool, but only like a quick stab button like on COD or BF3. how ever for them to work with good effect it would have to be behind the enemy. so it makes it harder to use, keeps players on there toes, and means things like the sneak and rush ego systems get better use.

One person says they are obsolete the other says they are overpowered. XD

I agree with you though that they are leaning more towards overpowered because as I said, they are going to be very close to Halo Energy swords (especially if you combo them with EGO skills). The DEVs already announced that they will be main weapons and not just a side weapon, so I don't think it is going to be like COD or BF3, I think it will be more like.... uhhh.... Oh I know maybe like Battlefront 2's Jedi. I bet they will do a simple preset combo, and maybe the charge attack will be a lunging maneuver with a Crit damage boost. Oh, or another game I just thought of is Gunz the dual (the first one) how their melee weapons were.

I doubt they will add the ability to block bullets, etc.

Balancing dual blades will be a challenge, but if they can get it to work I bet it will be crazy good fun. Even if they don't do dual wielding I am still just happy that they are adding charged blades.

EDIT: One more thing, doesn't the main bad guy already have a charged sword in this game??????

you're going to sneak up on someone with a glowing blade ? ok

yeah pretty much every modern gunfighter carries a knife, but almost no one uses them. seals ? yeah they don't transition from their primary to a knife. they pull a suppressed pistol for silent takedowns. a knife is more of a tool. if your primary goes down, you transition to secondary, which is a pistol for most shooters.

obsolete; yes. you don't bring a knife to a gun fight. once again i will remind of how fast datak shut the fk up when the miner showed him his pistol.

overpowered; yes. they have already sht the bed on weapon balance. ever use a slugger ? yeah it's grabage. 450 dmg pump shotgun that fires slugs with absolutely horrible accuracy ? what's the point. they are going to jack up the charge blades too. they will probably do 2k+ dmg w/o perks/rolls. this game is gonna be looking like multiplayer zelda when the blades first come out. i will give it 2 weeks tops, and if at that time i still feel like i am playing some medieval fantasy game i will eject the disk and feed it to my gf's pug. that dog will eat anything.

i think the only way charged blades won't ruin the game, by turning it into a sword fighter game, is if they make it something like a cod attack, like one of the above posters said. personally, i would rather just be able to give my opponent a boot to the chest/groin. i always thought it was silly being able to draw a knife, slash someone, and put it away in half a second.

i don't understand why so many sword lovers play this game. there are plenty of games in which swords make sense, and there are more of them. try world of warcraft or spartacus.

Have you ever played Warframe online? That game has swords, guns, bows, and a bunch of other thrown or melee weapons, and it does it right. I think they found a nice balance between all the weapons. If you've never heard of it before go google it or watch some videos on Youtube, doesn't matter which one, almost everyone switches between guns and melee equally. Speaking of thrown weapons... Give us throwing daggers! Irisa throws them all the time, I want some too! >.>

As for sneaking up on someone with a glowing weapon... Have you not played Halo? Any game with Decoys and invisiblity has it set up where the weapons go invisible with you... There is no glow, you won't see or hear anything.

"personally, i would rather just be able to give my opponent a boot to the chest/groin. i always thought it was silly being able to draw a knife, slash someone, and put it away in half a second."

I don't think it is going to be like that, the Devs said it will be a main weapon, so once you take the melee weapon out I'm pretty sure it stays out just like your gun. They will most likely only put the sword away when you switch to your other weapon, otherwise they will just keep it out just like they do their guns.

I actually only use Submachine guns and Shotguns on Defiance, I love them. The sawed off Shotty's aren't that bad to me, I have one that is purple colored. It is a one shot kill weapon if I shoot the enemy in the head; you mostly just have to know how to do your mods right. My highest leveled guns are all shotguns, and after that I think I have Submachine guns at like level 3 proficiency or something. The reason I use shotguns is because I play the same way I play on Halo, I smash up to my target, pull the trigger (get a critical hit), and if the target is still alive I quickly do a melee hit with my gun to kill them. Sometimes I switch the order and I'll punch them and while they stumble back I then quickly shoot them up close with a shotgun to kill them off. It's awesome!

All games have balancing issues, but Defiance is still new and still has a lot of time to fix any flaws they have with the game. If done correctly the melee weapons could make the game really fun. Again, check out Warframe because that game is awesome and did a really good job finding a good balance. I'm pretty sure Defiance will have a similar three hit combo attack for their melee weapons, and a charged attack that does double damage if you hold the button down.

As for this, I go back to my other point from my last post. Irisa has throwing daggers, main bad guy has a charged sword, Datak has a charged sword... They exist and they showed them to us, so we should have the choice to use them in the game. If you don't want one that is cool, but everyone else wants to use what they've seen. It only makes sense that they let us use everything in the show/game's lore...

It would almost be equal to them showing us the Rollers and not let us drive them... ಠ_ಠ
