Their is 1 disk. You load it up, and it asks you to install it. It takes about 7 mins.
I still have not had an update, but im guessing i will get one soon.
Servers are not up.. still (dam!)
The manual only contains the controls, terms & conditons, and a code used to download pre-ordered stuff.
You will probably have to download it on PS3.

What are these things people keep getting delivered? Why are they showing pictures of Defiance outside of the monitor? Why are they in that strange green case?
I got mine from game too. Major install when you first boot up then stuck on a loading screen. I figured servers would be up like every other game. Guess I will try again Monday night. I'll be pissed if they don't come up til 3pm GMT Tuesday like the beta server!
You figured the servers would be up before release? Gogo team logic!
Major install ? I had the cd but didnt bother since it took 20mins or so to patch fully.
