As I finished up season 1 with episode 12, I was greatly disappointed with the ending. No Spoilers. Don't worry. I was equally disappointed with the release date of season 2 being June 2014, practically a full year from now. With that said, I started considering what I'd be doing a year from now until the next season starts. I concluded that I probably wouldn't be playing this game and, in fact, would probably have given up on it a long time ago.
Trion wants us to play our way into Season 2 to continue making headway into groundbreaking material from the first ever TV show/companion MMO game, yet is challenged with keeping fans of the episodes and MMO's alike busy with new content until that time arrives.
The timing couldn't be worse if you consider the multitude of challenges and competition making their way into the spotlight. The Xbox 1 debuting with Elder Scrolls online, Bungee's Destiny, and a handful of other obstacles stand between the fan and the game. Combined with the cryptic ways Trion does business (Annoucing an exciting DLC without a release date) -with the many glitches, bugs and server hiccups that couple the game- you can't help but feel pessimistic about our friends at Trion meeting the gaming needs of the masses.
The silver lining can be gained by knowing that SyFy has the tendency to keep a very fanatical base of supporters that hold a "see no wrongs" attitude regardless of the odds. Battlestar Galactica is a prime example. It also wouldn't hurt to examine the Fox series Firefly that was cancelled after only 11 episodes but spawned a spinoff movie called Serenity and is still wildly popular in some circles. Defiance could easily be hailed as one of these examples with the game far exceeding expectations, if produced in the right direction.
The Verdict is unseen by anyone but it's just so easy to throw up your hands and walk away. The transition from the end of the season into off season may be a killing blow. Trion may also have something very sneaky up their sleeves.
