Weird, my first assumption in the game was "Oh dear god I will miss absolutely everything" and resigned myself to my fate of shotguns, sniper rifles, and punching things in the face.
Beyond that, it's just plain stupid to refuse to play with someone for being childish in a game. No matter how many bullets, monsters, evil thing, blood puddles, or bizarre clothing choices you see, it's still just a game for people to unwind with. And come on, if it wasn't for the funny stuff, any multiplayer experience would be ruined. You can't communicate as freely to everyone over an MMO, so the name can be considered an off-color joke to break the ice. Or just being bored out of your mind. Think about how those players react when they see a player with a serious name or ridiculous username that doesn't sound like a real name or a joke?

Anyway, I love MMOs, I've never called any of my characters "toons," and I think there is room for some humor/silliness. I just don't like crudeness. That most definitely will get people targeted, like you said. Hmm...my post didn't come off as sounding offended, did it? I hope not. It's just opinion.
