Again, "toon" has been in use at least since EverQuest hit the shelves in March 1999.

It was probably used even before that with Ultima Online, which went live in September 1997. I say probably, because I did not play UO, but it would be presumptuous to assume it couldn't have started there. Or earlier, even.
