They're called "toons" because they are animated drawings.
And I promise they were toons long ago and shall be toons long form now.
But call them whatever you want. Just pretend that when someone says toon, I say character or PC (I am LARP!), they are saying avatar, (and are blue with reproductive hair if you like).
