Lurker.. need to chime in with intelligent comment. :P

    -=Likely Reason for Price Cut=-
They tend to drop the prices of games these days a little before the DLC drops. Idea being that they want to increase the player base before DLC to increase the sales of the DLC.

There seems to be a pattern of Pre-DLC pricecuts amongst games these days. The pattern is kinda...

    a) Pre-Order = Inflated price.
    b) 1-2 months price drops to Standard Price.
    c) Sale Price 2-3 months out depending on reception.
    d) As new sales waiver = Sale Price.
    e) Pre-DLC = Mad price drop.
    f) After DLC = Standard Price cut.
    g) Bundle DLC and Standard into a ULTIMATE EDITION, and charge (D).
    f) Old Game Price
    g) Sale Price before the Second Version of the game comes out. (get people into the franchise to pay (a) later on.)

And so on and so forth...

Helpful theory... if you want to get the best price on the game, always buy right before the DLC drops. (Price point E.)

but no game i know of has dropped as much and as fast as defiance has
from release price of $69 just a few months ago to $9.99 is a fair drop for any game

april $69 > july $9.99 is a fast huge drop

$10 for the PC version. Walmart still has it for $35. Amazon ~$20.

So, if you want to talk about PC prices,
    1) The Defiance BUY page shows it sort of as a "Sale", by the giant red price slash.
    2) Again, gets lots of users to buy the game which is already made so they will buy a DLC at full price in a month or so.

I'd suspect the price of Defiance will go back up when the DLC drops.

As for the uniqueness of this price drop.. It may be possible to point to examples of other MMO's that have gone Free to Play in (x) amount of time that is equivalent or greater than here.. but it would take some research.

Mind you, Steam has greatly changed the marketplace for PC games and prices. The economics are interesting. Back in the day you'd have to rummage through busted copies at a Gamestop for PC deals, and you'd be lucky to get under $10.

It's a wonderful age we live in.

STO (Star Trek Online) had just as bad a release (game wasn't even 50% done), price fell like a rock inside of six months, let staff go and was eventually sold to PWE. However, through it all, there was a small core of players that kept playing and helped to keep the lights on long enough for the game to find its way to becoming a success. Defiance just needs time imo.

The Steam pricing to me seems to be an error of sorts. I doubt the game will remain at $9.99. It makes no sense that the game would be that price, but a four pack would be $10 cheaper ($29.99). That's a savings of a full game at the current listed price.

It does feel a little like a rip-off. I bought the game barely two weeks ago and it was over twenty bucks. Thanks a lot!

It's funny that they have to slash prices only 4 months after release.

Clearly this game is a massive success and will be GotY!

What's not so funny is I pre-ordered and paid full price.

Is it really flopping so hard it need a bare bones price?

Sorry for the title it should be read without the "on Steam" part, because it is $9.99 to get it anywhere. I just said Steam because that's where I own my game.
Don't feel bad. I myself bought:

    PS3: Digital Deluxe version
360: That $150 box with statue
    PC: Digital Deluxe from steam

I quit playing about a month after release when I couldn't find a reason to keep going after about lvl 1800.

haha, I just payed more for it during the steam sale.. go figure. I think the game is pretty decent so far, pvp could be more in depth though.
