that is exactly what I was referring to. for a server side patches are simple to roll back.

I'm just curious, if there are any devs (not necessarily Trion devs, but who do dev work for a living) in this thread that know what it takes to do a patch ... I'm guessing not many if any...
Here's the deal and why MS charges so much even for a minor patch... the bits have to be stored somewhere... which means it's gotta sit on a server at MS somewhere (odds are, at several locations at various data centers). That means some one has to move it onto those servers... that's time and cost... so by making the patch charges fairly steep, it cuts down on the number of times patches get submitted. Otherwise some dev shops would go nutters and start releasing the smallest of patches every day. This forces a more controlled schedule and effort. I know I get annoyed when I get updates for apps which I JUSt updated the day before. But yeah, unfortunately it does mean that the smaller the shop, the less likely you are to get updates in a reasonable time frame. It sucks, but there's really not much that can be done about it.
Certification... MS can't win with this one either... either they run it through their certification process and make sure that the code bits aren't going to suddenly start erasing everyone's xBox information (which means we have to wait a little longer, and get code that's not going to suddenly turn our boxes into nodes on the SkyNet) or they simply take what's submitted, release it, and then take the heat when people suddenly start getting the RROD because a component got fried due to some rampant code.
Fortunately, any client updates should be minimal at best... most of the patching will go unseen on the servers themselves, which are in direct Trion control at their data centers.

This information has been misquoted so many times now it actually reminds me of the game telephone. In reality, Tim Schafer stated that to patch a console game its total cost would be around $40,000. This includes the money spent on development, internal testing, and the certification process, among other things. As a result, a lot of that cost is spent internally. Please stop misquoting this information, it just proves how stupid/gullible most people on the Internet really are.
You are confused. Any patch to an Xbox game HAS to go through certification. What Trion is going to do is update their servers to fix server side bugs, improve performance, etc. If and when they patch the actual game client on your machine, it will still go through MS certification.
What creates the confusion for people is they don't know the difference between a patch and a server update. When the actual game client software changes, then it's a patch and MS will NEVER give up 100% control of the software running on their machines. Well, not willingly of course.
patches go through analysis, which does cost. often, a developer will include a lot of bug fixes in a DLC instead of releasing a patch AND additional content separately, recouping some losses since the DLC is paid content. There was a dev blob I saw a few months ago about a patch to XCOM, they were saying they use the PC versions as a test-bed before rolling out the major patches to the consoles. Since an MMO requires an internet connection, M$ may be willing to negate this cost, because everyone who needs the patch is already paying them for the Live service, so it might simply come out of their subscription profits instead of billing Trion for it. Some posters are correct, a lot of bugs can be patched on the server end, the only thing they'd need to patch on the client end is general stability, graphic options, map changes, UI changes... Things like item drops, dmg, AI, and quests, can be usually corrected on the server end.
Sorry no confusion (on my part atleast). The post read there will be no charge or certification process for hotfixes/patching. You are most likely thinking of DLC. I have tried searching for the thread with the response but any further questions you guys can probably pm a moderator but i've already read the response to this question.
Whether or not that involves changes to the client on our end or not i do not know and didn't even claim to know that, i simply gave the response that had already been given from a trion mod on the forum. So i'm not sure why you assumed i did.
i poop...
in that statement i have put forward more correct info then most of you involving this topic
