I entered the preorder code today, hoping that it would allow me to donwload the client in advance, but when I try to login to the patcher, a message says that my account is not entitled to play DEFIANCE.

Yes it is normal.
At the point you get this message you already preloaded 10GB.
You could've read this in the big "Defiance client ready for download!" topic.
The question has been asked several times.
Yes, that is normal. Trion will not activate their download server until later today, so while they are down you will just get that error message. Try again in a few hours or during the weekend.
If you have purchased from Trion Worlds for pc you can. Other sites are being looked into.

Trion needs to authorize your account. Tokens should be going out today thru Monday. See Sledge's thread here:

And now in the transactions hystory the preorder code is disappeared, there are only the ark hunter ones :S
Preordered yesterday from Steam, clicked "key code" on the right menu and inserted the code in my Trion account.
I was able to download and patch the client as soon as i have entered the code.
As always forgive me for my bad english

Not everyone gets to pre-load at once though. Im still not able to pre-load.
