Lol, it's full of clans (the names underneath their character names are their clan names) just ask around. But don't bother joining a clan atm, this game is close to dying, even the biggest clans of 500 members have trouble getting over 10 people online in the evenings. I'd also suggest not wasting money on this game anymore untill they actually release a DLC. Because up untill now it has been alot of big promises, but nothing to show for it.

Some clans can boast of numbers in the thousands. Browncoats, Core, or Freemasons come to mind, though there's Third World Tactics and 47th Legion that come to mind as being some of the biggest and more importantly most publicized.
Now if you're PC-NA Left Arm is always willing to take on more people Just find echo1, Dark Spikeo, or The Pin in game to apply.
Don't you notice how empty the forums are getting, don't you notice that Arkfalls are only filled with a handfull of people, don't you notice that it takes half an hour to fill a FY match? And filling a FY match require people from all over the same server, so from the whole EU server we cannot find 30 players in half an hour!

We had an ops last night with 35 members on. It might not sound like a ton but our active roster only holds about 110 members. That's almost 32% of our membership online simultaneously. No one else is currently posting numbers like that on NA PC that I'm aware of and I do check our competitor's VOIP monitors once a week or so during prime time.
We're pretty niche and reject our fair share of applicants though.
Anyways, I'm confident that we're the most active clan on NA PC. I've seen quite a few of our competing clans declining over the past month and we've only grown and grown taking on 1-4 applicants daily.

Is there any PM system in the game so I don't have to track someone down?
You can send whispers/tells but that's it. Aside from that, all correspondence is best handled on a guild's website.
Obsidian...best clan on Xbox 360....every other clan enjoys our leftovers...We have no trouble at all keeping people online and interested in doing random things. Glad to see the nobody mentioned us lol.
I would actually like a clan, NA Xbox, that is active. I was part of a semi active clan but long since its seemed to have fallen to darkness. I would love an actual clan that wishes to do events, and things on occassion. As was stated its dull riding alone all the time, and hunting volge alone is dangerous, but do able.
