probably depends on the details of the contract between trion and syfy.
for example with SWG lucas arts was pretty much the one funding the game, and as swtor's launch was approaching, LA chose to buy out the rest of the term of their contract for SWG and close it.
so defiance will likely live as long as syfy keeps renewing the contract as it approaches expiry each time, which may indeed be tied to the success of the show.
Trion has stated in the past that the two can live on with out the other one, so if the show fails and is cut from TV, the game will continue on. On the flipside if the game launches and falls flat on its face and closes up in 6 months (heaven forbid) the show will continue on.
I sure hope the series goes well. it looks pretty sweet. Even some of my family who are not gamers will be watching with me ^^
Well, I doubt either will be going anywhere for at least a year.
I believe there are already 13 episodes of the show made, and a year's worth of DLC planned. Then again it is SciFy and they do have a penchant for getting rid of shows that seem to be doing well but don't meet some weird standard they set.
I'd bet on the game lasting longer than the show though, if it comes down to it. Hopefully both last a long time though as I need a new show to get into after being disappointed with the direction of The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones.
SyFy lately got a reputation for killing off shows prematurely. SG:A, SG:U, Alphas, just to name a few. Now Defiance looks to be a good show as well, but the hyping that's done by SyFy looks like they think Defiance is more than it really is. Imagine what will happen if the SyFy people responsible for the show are brought back down to earth.
Initially, the Defiance project - a TV show running hand in hand with a game - was quite intriguing. SyFy however turned me off. I went all-in only after Trion said they're going to keep the game running by themselves if the show gets cancelled.
