How about an apartment building with a mission or several to unlock a place for you to live? In that building a player can choose how their apartment looks with a bunch of decorative themes at a price. The apartment will have a modest amount of additional storage for those weapons and mods you just can't part with but don't use that often.
The cool thing is it will take up no exterior room beyond the building itself but thousands of players could still have a place there.
The winter cold is coming around the corner and we're all sleeping in our rollers outside the Crater which has vacancy. There's no way for us to sleep it off pass the day to night, visa verse, and enter a new world with that said sleep time. (Server/ Shard hopping)
Besides, it's getting cramped in the the ol' Dodge.

yes we need houses. like actual go out and gather materials and built it. so we could create a real town in the fame with a huge ark hunter slum or gated community. or a gated favella...?
My opinion is that if Trion did some sort of storage it would most likely be in the form of a re-purposed vendor machine or even a new tab in current machines.

Having just joined the Game, Storage would be good. This I have found to be a must have these days. Most Hunters, Scavengers are Horders by definition, I can't see Ark Hunters being any different. We need storage.
I'd like to see way stations, bit like the occasional Gas station you see along the routes, but with an instance entrance to your own Rest stop. As others have mentioned, maybe you could have Trophies, from Big Arkfall or Instanced quests. Something People can see when they are grouped with you and enter your Rest stop. A Gun and Mod cabbinet, so you don't have to traul through god knows how many Items to find them, In each cabinet, a Tab that is color coded to the Rareity of the item.
That's just my take on things.
