I'm sure I saw on one of the "Making of Defiance" videos, where they outfitted a challenger in real life for use in the TV show. They mentioned that the mount on top of the bonnet was the cars power source and didn't rely on fuel.
So my guess is, it is the same for vehicles in game also

Actually the only bad bit about the idea in general is the micro transactions. Granted the actual idea doesn't fit in well with this game/show's lore but the idea that in a game that you can drive to places in, you have to earn/get fuel in one way or another to drive about just adds to the complexities of game play meaning you'd have to walk/run to places if you run out of fuel. As long as the resources are plentiful then it needn't be a problem.
For this game though, with the size of the map being huge, the game/show's explanation and fast travel doing away with the need, there's no point.

The exhaust note from ALL of the vehicles so far is that of an internal combustion engine... thought I'd point that out...

Why would you add a system that adds realism to one in which you are magically storing and summoning ATVs and cars from your pocket?

Also when using boost flames come out the back which is indicative of an additive like Nos being introduced to the cylinder... once again food for thought

The storyline has explained that cars DO NOT run on fossil fuels anymore (obviously, lest you forget the Votans now have to use our vehicles too so OF COURSE they would "fix them"....*fossil fuel systems when you really think about it.......are EXTREMELY dangerous*). So I hate to break it to the OP......but this would be pointless, due to the back story, "fuel" would cost us nothing pretty much because apparently the new fuel system is ridiculously efficient.
