You really don't want them to go F2P. At this stage, it would mean they really screwed up, not to mention the fluff would get even worse and they would eventually put in some sort of pay to win.
Pretty much, that is when the population dips so badly they have to go F2p just to try and get a pulse going again and the project is almost totally reliant on a in-game store. Many games don't survive very well past that point.

    Nope.

DC Universe still has a lot of paying monthly subs, not to mention all the F2Pers that go nuts in their cash shop on costumes and effects. They also have a huge company behind it.

Plus, DC Universe is a known IP. Who doesn't know Superman throughout most of the civilized world? For that matter, who outside of SyFy watchers ever heard of "Defiance"?

Not necessarily. They could continue selling vanity items and boosters (which should stay the way they are) for cash and increase the rate they crank out DLCs. One DLC per month for a one time fee of $5 to $10, depending on its size.

Unfortunately that would require a solid foundation of the game to build upon, but with that many bugs still in it, it would be like building on sand.

World of Tanks (a F2P pseudo-MMO in some ways similar to Defiance, if I understand correctly) is currently in beta on the Xbox, to be released Soon(tm).

Personally I'm not a fan of F2P, for many of the same reasons that Hartsman has given in the past.

Increasingly, however, I'm becoming soured on B2P. The way Defiance, and, to a lesser extent, GW2 have implemented B2P it becomes clear that the goal is to get the best of both worlds -- a box price plus designing every aspect of the game around monetizing the hell out of it. So frankly, though I don't think F2P is necessarily the savior of failing games it's always touted as, I'm not sure it would make all that much difference in the negative.

Not, mind you, that I'd really expect it to happen.

I will say that Defiance has done one thing I never thought would happen; given me new found respect for Anet and GW2. Still don't like that game (and, to be fair, I've played Defiance way more), what they've done to the franchise (GW2 is GW1's pale sibling at absolute best), or the ways in which they've blatantly obviously tried to funnel anything and everything they can manage into their store, but at least the game has nice visuals, a world you can't run across in minutes, and slightly more depth than a parking lot puddle.

No, thank you very much, $10 price is a good barrier against people who'll never pay anything anyway.

F2P transition results in creepy community and non-existent support - just check APB: Reloaded (it's the worst community in my MMO experience) and Neverwinter (worst support).

I dont know why everyone thinks F2P is the answer. It killed City of Heroes and as others have said in DCUO they stopped fixing the game and just keep making DLC to get money out of everyone. I paid full price for DCUO and thought it as a slap in the face for it to become F2P. I paid full price for Defiance and it has been on sale for $10 on PC and console, if someone cant pay $10 then maybe they shouldnt play it.

No. Thousands times No! Because every F2P sooner or later becomes a "Pay to win". Of course, there are exceptions.

"World of Tanks" was mentioned here. Yes, it's true. I played "WOT" and participated in the closed beta test of "World of Warplanes". There's no need to pay if you do not want. REALLY. But this is a very rare case. "Wargaming" went against the tide. By the way, their devs and leading game designer always answer every question in the forum. And he's a big troll.
