I wouldn't have even know about this game if it wasn't for steam. So in my opinion it was a good move for them even if Valve gets a cut.

In order to do this they would effectivly nullify thier contract with steam and be subject to legal processes as well as triple the load/bandwidth on thier own download servers.
To attract people to purchase from steam they to be able to offer unique bonuses. I chose the Trion one because i can buy the slots ingame anyways. 30day xp/scrip boost were the real clinchers for me.

If it wasn't for Steam I wouldn't have heard about this game.

Trion uses Steam and other partners to broaden their reach to the market. Steam does a fine job displaying Defiance to their customer base. If Trion were to match the offers on their own site, they would be undermining their partners and wouldn't HAVE any partners for the next Rodeo.

As Mac says ,Steam is a big giant and Steam did ask for something special so they could be the center of attention.
    This has a price .
In the long run we all profit as more sales is feeding the life span of the game.
It sounds unfair to some but if you understand how it works you might still not agree but at least you understand why it happens .

The Witcher 2 sold something around the region of 80% of all sales through Steam.

Steam does have terrible support and lazy customer service and you usually do spend 90% of your time trying to find fixes to Beta events and linking accounts because Steam simply can't be bothered to help the community because all they care about is money.. I forgot what I was talking about, oh yeah, at least they're not EA.
