It is different for each store. My gamestop requires 75 pre-orders for a midnight launch

I believe this timing is selected wisely to lower the pressure on login servers because people will sleep.

I will be staying up tonight watching adult swim, then spend the rest of the day grilling burgers and drinking, then spend the night watching game of thrones season premiere and walking dead finale, then drink into monday and pass out around noon and then wake up later that night, in time, well rested to enjoy the game go live and probably not sleep for the next 24 hours. haha.
