Problems with Defiance, as a whole

Look, Defiance is losing it's player base. It has to be, or why else would the powers that be keep on cutting the price of the basic game? Now they have po'ed the people who paid full price ($59) by cutting the price to only $10!!! H*ll they've po'ed the people who paid $30 for the game also!

This was supposed to be a game that coincided with the Sci Fi series, so, where is the town/s, the bar and a social setting? You want people to play? There has to be social!!! There are so many 1st person shooters out there, it is silly! You have to offer people more, especially for an on-line game. You want people to pay, you've got to give them more then 1 alien race to play, and going bang bang bang all the time.

I'm not interested in PvP, I'm playing the game on my laptop, and the game freezes occasionally and I die. BUT, I am interested in interacting with other players, and there is NO venue in the game to do so.
If the game stays as it is, I see it lasting, but with a limited player base . . . even if it has a good show on Sci Fi to keep it going . . . simple DLC with “new” races to play, new clothes/uniforms, weapons, vehicles is not going to keep people interested. Look at the games that have social interface, they survive and thrive . . . those that do not, slowly die (there are way too many games out there to make comparisons).

I bought the $30 game, and got the expanded version the next month after trying the free version. I was hoping that the expanded would open up some looked for social interface with other players. I am sure not going to buy any DLC, unless there is something more offered. I can do a shoot-em-up by playing “Fallout: New Vegas,” “World of Tanks,” or “Marvel Heroes” for that matter cheaper and just as fun

As far as I'm concerned, after 2 months of playing and that I've done all there is except defeat the last villain . . . then, you've lost me as well.

Yep. This has been one of its major flaws and failures: lack of basic social features.

To be honest, the Defiance setting and lore are very good. Why Trion thought that making the game-half of the franchise a third person shooter was a good idea is beyond me. Defiance, more than most games, should have been an MMORPG, where the lore/setting could be better explored through the questing system. Irathient tribes, Castithan arrogance and politcs, towns here and there as social hubs and trading posts, with quests for them to get you involved in their problems and lore. Even the tension between the races.

They could have still kept the action-combat for the guns, and also likely have done far better with the melee and charged blades end of things. Arkfalls? Not a problem, rifts work just fine in Rift.

They have a great setting, and they pissed it away on a shooter game. Shame that Syfy is doing a far, far better job with an I.P. that Trion Worlds holds the trademark for. I never thought I would say these words, but I actually wish Syfy had owned it. At least then, once Trion finished killing this game, there'd have been at least a remote hope for a real Defiance MMO one day.

Hell, I am still trying to figure out why an Irathient would be working for Von Bach Industries. It would have made better sense to have had Human or Castithan, or Human or Sensoth as those races. But, again, this comes down to why Defiance would have been treated right and better in an actual MMORPG. Instead, we seem to have Defiance/Star Wars Battlefronts, where setting and lore don't mean a damned thing except in the TV show.

Syfy seems to be creating the real meat and stories of Defiance. Syfy has people creating the cultures and languages. Syfy is paying for the show and marketing, plus funded 50% of the game's development.

All Trion Worlds had to do was put in the other 50%, it seems, and create a compelling game to sell its half of the franchise to the consumers.

And the San Diego Studio came up with . . . this?

    Wow. It boggles the mind.

First we need to find out: Is it achievable for consoles? I'm not trying to start arguments about the master race. I don`t care about this antagonism. But we must understand that this is a multi-platform system. Imagine a caravan. The overall speed of the caravan limited by the maximum speed of the slowest member. If these innovations can not be implemented on the consoles, they will never appear in the PC version, because developers reduce everything to a common denominator. Unfortunately, we can not say for sure. It would be desirable to hear the official information from the developers.
    Don’t hold me up now,
I can stand my own ground,
I don’t need your help now,
You will let me down, down, down!

You want to RP and social interaction, join a clan. If that doesn't suit you, feel free to hop on over to a game that has what you want. Nobody is going to hold your hand and interact with you. 2 months and haven't beaten Nim? ROFL

Like posted above, this won't happen due to the consoles. It would require a remake of many of the parts of the game. If it upsets you that much, just move on. You aren't interested in PvP, you haven't finished the story, but you have done all there is to do? Personally, it sounds to me like you are some whiny kid that wants to be catered to.

I agree with the OP but certainly not this. The only thing this game has going for it is the gameplay. If this had a been typical coma-inducing tab-to-target hotbar mashfest I wouldn't have even purchased the game.

There's a million clones out there; Defiance isn't one of them. The best decision Trion Worlds made with this game was making it a shooter.

First thing we need to do with Defiance is make the forums work like Twitter with a max of 140 characters so I don't have to read essay like original posts and essay like replies. Just get to the point. Ty

They can keep the gameplay and still make it an mmorpg and it would succeed many times over compared to the mess we got now. This game needs the storyline and social features of an mmorpg or it's going to disappear quickly.

Is it better to out-monster the monster or to be quietly devoured?

in keeping with August's point, as i in no way want to start the "master race" argument---

console gamers in general have a game attention span of 40-80 hours worth of play time. because most games are designed that way. mmo's started on the pc, and have lasted on the pc, which is why you will see pc guys sticking around til the end of days for a game. city of heroes was like that. star trek online(somehow) is like that.

keeping console gamers interested in something for more than a few weeks worth of play is a tough ordeal, unless its battlefield or COD. plain and simple. which i think Trion should celebrate a small victory in that there are A LOT of console gamers that have been sticking around for Defiance.

as long as they can keep in line with the show for us story lovers, make what stability improvements are needed and introduce some cool new stuff, this game should stick around. there is actually a lot more positive than negative, it is just that most of the people(especially on here) are so concerned with their personal needs, they forget the bigger concept of a community.

    just my opinion.

supposedly the dlc gonna make the social chatting easier, but didn't specify how.
as far as story goes, that might be dependent on what will happen to the tv series, because they said from the beginning that there's always going to be some tie in, so it might evolve with the show.
