yup and they still have countries were you need to enlist according to the law.
also most countries will have somekind of law that says that every citizen above 18 years, can be called to arms in times of war.
meaning that everyone would need to join the military in order to protect their country.

National service is what your talking about and its usually for only 2-4 years. In the UK and infact the full Commonwealth in times of war the Queen has the power to call up all physically fit citizens to help fight in the war.

i am a veteran. former u.s army. i have nothing but love and respect for any who has served, is serving, or has honestly tried even if you couldnt get in because of say, a medical thing. i really think that anyone who hasnt served in the military has no right to flame those who have, you havent earned the right because its people like the veterans and active duty, even the spouses that have made it possible for you to even have a right to voice your opinion. troops arent politicians so people shouldnt look down on them for the crappy job you may or may not think a goverment is doing. plain and simple HOOAH!!!

Personally I think the military is pointless in today's world. Heck most of the wars the US are in was staged by them for oil or other reasons, Heck look at what's funding most of our wars "drugs". People can join the military and go fight for the corporation of this world but I would rather the billions of dollars every year be spent on more useful things such a space travel, and scientific research. That being said the only solders I would ever have respect for are the are the ones that fought the British, civil war and the world wars.
