Can I play my character cross platform?

I have the PS3 version of the game.
If I buy the Windows PC version of the game, will I be able to use the character I've built up on the PS3?

I am wondering because I would like to play with a PC guy and as everyone knows, players on different platforms can't play together.

And for god's sake Trion, please, unite the platforms. It can only help the game & TV show become more successful.
If you want, segregate PvP but unite everything else.

Nope you won't be able to. Would have to start from scratch. Also I'm pretty sure it would be a nightmare to unite the platforms like that as I have never heard of it being done with any game.

no it's not a nightmare at all. A Trion employee from San Diego told me (face to face) that they play cross platform in their office. It's a stupid switch that they can turn on and off.

It isn't that Trion or any other company couldn't do it-I have a friend who has worked for big name devs (not Trion), and a console maker, and he said it could be done. The stumbling point(s) would have the initials MS and a name that rhymes with Pony.

See, the console makers and/or content distributors (Steam on PCs) would have to agree to allow this but there's no incentive for them to do so. First off, if say er Microsoft (you figured it out anyway, right), said ok to this then that means they're letting you take your character and stuff from their platform and go play on the PS3. They'd realize if you use that character on the PS3 then you might actually buy stuff for it on the PS3 too. And that might give them night terrors.

Then Po...I mean Sony would have to say ok, you can use this stuff you bought on the xbox on the PS3 because we don't want to make you have to buy it again--they'd be glad to give up the money Trion pays to them for the stuff sold.

    And vice versa.

It is very likely that such things are specifically spelled out in contracts with console makers and even game distributors.

Yeah, all our character data is stored server side, shouldn't be any problem to use a character created on the 360 on the PS3/PC, or vice versa. Hell, they could even charge for it, like how Blizz charges to change servers for a toon.

As far as the cross platform play, it's probably because developers use Dev kit models of systems, not retail units. Either that or your story is bs, which I'm inclined to believe is possible.

I would like to direct you to the Final Fantasy XI on pc, ps2 and x360 and FFXIV:ARR on ps3, ps4 (and possibly the xbox next providing things workout between M$ and SE), both of those did/do cross platform surprisingly well, as for the future of cross platform play the xbox next, ps4 and pc's will all have the option to run all online based games (provided they are released on multiple platforms to start with) on servers where all the platforms will be connected thereby allowing cross platform play, however as was mentioned earlier in the thread there is 3 big barriers that devs need to convince to allow this functionality for their games.

Point in case is Digital Extremes is currently in talks with sony about allowing their new game Warframe (pc/ps4, with a side possibility of an xbox next release) to run cross platform, so that pc and ps4 players are in the exact same maps fighting alongside users on the other platform, the progress on this has not been made public yet, however the last progress update that was announced was that talks about the of cross platform play progress was very positive, and if they can get sony 100% onboard with this then microsoft have said they will also offer their user base the option to play alongside the pc and ps4 users, making that the third game to ever be ran on servers that connect the 3 biggest online markets together in one massive community.

FF14 ARR, ps3 and pc players play together, you can even use your character on either version.

Lol how in the world did i forget about ffxiv given that i am playing it right now, oh and with the unofficial slip from the M$ Xbox next executive in an interview about upcomming titles for the xbox next and mentioned they were in talks with SE about having the pc version 'ported' to it, so atm at least it seems also likely to be a ffxiv release on that as well, so that will indeed make a grand total of 3 games that are all fully cross platform playable.

imo complete cross-platform compatibility will be a huge boon for the gaming community as it will lower the barriers that currently stop people from buying software from certain distributors, because of the lack of being able to play with friends who might happen to own a different platform.

edited original post of mine to include ffxiv......
