You still need access to the router/modem to setup VPN and even then VPN is mostly for file access not so much as for gaming use (thou in terms of gaming say a virtual lan via the net there is hamachi and gameranger - latter for older games that don't have dedicated wan servers no more.)
Just better to go ask the admins and ISP's if they are willing to unblock or forward the ports for you tbh, if the firewall is not a home one that you have access to.
On a side note: Gen when setting up portforward rules you can have one system in DMZ (will be exposed to the net if set on modem side). What I do is I have UPnP (there has been news that its a risk BUT only on older versions of firmware depending on your modem/router manufacturer) enabled for the consoles then have the gaming rig in DMZ on the router then the router in DMZ on the modem and then only forward non gaming ports that need access from the net like requests being added to my playlist.
This allows me to setup up internet access rights for the software on the gaming rig software firewall with less tweaking on the router for a non restrictive nat for gaming whilst still maintaining good software and hardware firewalls for the other devices on the network.
(sorry I get carried away when I talk IT xD)

They have software VPN's, That's what I use it's just a program I download from them and it encrypts all the traffic entering or leaving my PC to the VPN's server. I play games and surf the internet and stream movies on it just fine. I didn't need to have access to my route or mess with any ports.
Just buy a cheap 3G/4G phone with unlimited data (Like Boost, Virgin, T-Mo, etc) and tether it. The game claims to require 5Mbps for internet but I've never had an issue even when throttle to 2.5Mbps.
Otherwise you suffer the consequences of living on campus as most SysAdmins are unwilling to port forward for non-education purposes. Dems da breaks, son.

Well for all those people saying you dont need port forwarding because you haven't had to use please stop advocating that. I've had to do this at least a handful of times and it does work. I can even verify it. Simply unplug my router and connect my internet directly to my PC and BAM Defiance works.
