Trion (and 1st time MMO players) prepare for the whiners

I'm sure Trion is aware of this since it happened in Rift as well but here comes a new MMO launch and with it comes the incessant whiners. I've played a lot of MMOs at launch and they are always there, whining about everything that doesn't work exactly the way they want it to from the UI to server capacity to the color of an outfit.

There are a couple differences this time around though. There are no servers of the type we are accustomed to so one of their biggest whines, that they had to wait in a queue for 5-30 minutes to log in during the first week of release has been effectively neutralized. In the past, there would be so much crying about log-in queues that developers would feel pressure to open a bunch of extra servers that would end up being ghost towns within 2 months of release. That would lead to inevitable server merges as the initial rush died down. There are only 2 games that I can think of that haven't had to merge servers when they added extra servers after release: WoW and Guild Wars 2. There may be others but those are the only ones that come to mind for me. Anyway, that is a non-issue with Defiance since there is just one massive server.

The next most common whine has to be about class balancing (especially in PvP.) This has also been somewhat neutralized since there are no true classes. However, expect to see an onslaught of whines about various different weapons being overpowered or underpowered. Rest assured that there will be people that will whine vociferously if their weapon of choice is considered the latter and they will whine even louder if one of the former happens to kill them too many times in PvP (once can be considered too many for a habitual whiner.) Hell, we're already seeing threads like that from the last beta weekend.

If this is the first MMO you've played, steel yourself because there is no more self-entitled whiny crybaby than the average MMO player complaining on the game's official forums. My advice is just ignore the forums for the first couple of months if you can. If you must go to them for something, do not engage these individuals in debate about their issues. Doing so is fruitless and only serves to keep bumping their whine threads to the top of the board. Let their threads sink into the endless nether and wait for their inevitable departure. Normally that is shortly after their free month is up but since this game is free to play after you buy it, they may stick around a bit longer than normal. Be strong!

The biggest complain with weapons is there will be nothing that makes a starting white different from a 500 legendary since all weapons can be upgraded and modded. So there is no need to really buy new weapons. Each weapon will have its niche for the playstyle but inside that weapon class there will be almost no diversity.

My biggest suggestion for threads like this is HTFU.

Like you already stated the whiners can be avoided by just staying away from the forums and if you feel you must read the whiner threads just don't engage them!

Looking forward to launch, wishing players and Devs good luck on Tuesday!
