Go ask some middle school students. They're the core market for consols. Parents buy them by the ton. If they're not interested, then there's problems. AND GUESS WHAT! They're mostly not from what I've found. Seriously, the vast majority of people don't give a flying rats ***.

Thats why smart gamers will keep their other systems incase they want to play older games. Also I have no issue with inability to resell used games. I keep every single game I have ever purchased and I think those who do get rid of their games after their done with them arent real gamers. I know many people also who feel the same way. While I agree the requirement to have Kinect connected at all times is asinine, I personally wont have any issues with it since this time around I dont plan on buying Microsoft's next gen with owning all 3 of the current gen but mostly playing just PS3.
PS3 had no backwards compatibility (unlike the 360 which had basic backwards compatibility) and was so expensive that no one wanted to **** with it. It sold poorly in the beginning, and only picked up after the first year. It was barely profitable within an allowable time frame.

And you also forget a major point. PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE THE DISPOSABLE INCOME TO DROP ON A SIX HUNDRED DOLLAR FREAKING CONSOL THAT GIVES THEM NOTHING MAJORLY ADVANCING IN CAPABILITIES. The PS4 and 720 have BARELY better graphics, and have NOTHING on a decent PC in terms of power and graphical quality. People are not going to drop that kind of price point on a machine they will not use, or at least, not enough people will do so to make them profitable.

edit: Also, to clarify. I'm NOT saying NO ONE will buy these consols. I'm saying that no where near enough people will buy them within the first year to make a profit before investors abandon the projects in droves.

I did not keep every single game I ever purchased... am I not real? or a gamer?

I think that you are a collector not a gamer

Credibility crash.... Oh and the 3 hour ps4 announcement 'real' gamers were disappointed...

Dude.... you are a rich kid. Either upper middle class or you spend every last spare cent you have on games.

GUESS WHAT! NOT ALL OF US HAVE THE DISPOSABLE INCOME TO BUY EVERY GAME WE WANT!

SOME OF US DON'T HAVE THE DISPOSABLE INCOME TO BUY MOST OF THE GAMES WE WANT!

MANY OF US BARELY HAVE THE DISPOSABLE INCOME TO BUY HALF (if that) THE GAMES WE WANT WHEN WE FACTOR IN RESELLING AND TRADE INS!

So go play in your land of "real gamers" who are just like you and are rich and such. It'll be fairly lonely.

Just a quick Q. Did I miss the memo about the next gen Xbox and PS4 already being announced as $600?!!

I'm certain that they haven't decided the pricing yet with 8ish months still to go, so lets see what strategy they coming up with first! I strongly believe that they're going to have to sell them at a heavy loss in order to get people interested, and then make up some of the shortfall on software and dashboard shenanigans (Netflix etc)

If they do turn out to be $600 then I will agree with you - they will crash and burn. I just don't think they can afford to think that way. I'm also sure that I've read in a few places that they will cost considerably less than that.

Edit: Many analysts are predicting £300 which is about $450. As the UK always pays more than the US anyway then you're probably looking at $400.

I have no problem seeing PC version living on but I just cant see the console having much life by this time next year. I have also heard no announcements being made that they will bring this game to next gen either.

I get why they have the game coming out along with the show, I love the idea of both running side by side and helping/affecting the story out somehow on both sides. I just question their reasoning behind it for consoles. While I generally prefer my MMOs to be played on PC, I prefer my FPS/shooters on console. The sole reason I wont be getting this game, as much as I have enjoyed the beta is because come Nov. my PS3 days are pretty much done, aside from probably GTA V since they stated their not bringing it to next gen. If it was decided to bring it to next gen then I would buy it, but right now my only time with the Defiance universe was with the game and the time I enjoyed in beta and the show when it premieres later this month.
Keep in mind there will be a transition period.

Not everyone is going to go out day one and spend $500 (give or take) on a new system with games, it usually takes a good year or two for the majority to take the leap. Personally, I won't be transitioning until I see multiple games that I'm very interested in - and I'm a very active gamer, most people are not hardcore gamers and will wait until the prices and games are more appealing for them.

So far all I've seen that interests me is the new Killzone and Capcoms new RPG "Deep Down", but so far this isn't enough of an excuse for me to go out and spend so much money - I need more. :P

Considering that not a lot is known about the new consoles other than no backwards compatibility, which for me is a a deal breaker. Unless these machines are game changers and ship with the absolute most up to date processors and graphics with 16 gigs ram and a 1 tb HD I am not interested. Because by the time they design, test and work out the bugs that uberness will be 2 generations ago.

The PS2 is STILL the highest selling console of all time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._game_consoles

The new systems will not be that special. There is almost no publicity on them and I doubt they will see the light of day this year. They have i9 core processors coming out on the market at affordable prices. The 720 and P3 will have at best a quad with 4 gigs ram and a 500gb HD as the max option?

Trion likely would not have released Defiance for the current systems if the new ones were just around the corner, they could have saved a ton of development time and energy and upgraded the game for the new consoles. Why do twice the work? Developers do tend to find out about these things before we do. How do you think they get games out for release?

Simple deduction tells me that either the new consoles are not as close to being ready as the OP thinks, or Trion has a lack of faith in their popularity. It is also good business sense to make for what works, and not for what might be.

Not buying any "Next Gen" consoles, why when my PC is beyond the announced spec of PS4, and next Xbox. Also I beta Defiance on both consoles as well as PC, and console played like crap. Sub par frame rates, no 1920 X 1080, couldn't see everything during arkfalls, terrain constantly loaded in as drove thru, and sound took a turd when a whole lot of explosions happend. Don't tell me it was just beta, and they can fix it.

Sony said in some Jmag it will sell at $400 (a huge loss)
